Why can't they understand?

Does anyone have tips on helping partners and friends/family understand what you're feeling? I have many wonderful people in my life but when the chips are down and I ask for help they all seem to say "snap out of it", "everyone's depressed sometimes" , "you need to get over it, move on" Its like the only person I can be honest with and have understand me is my counsellor, and it sucks to have to pay someone to care. Sad really.

can you be honest and tell them that you are suffering depression? If people have a better understanding of whats going on they may be of more help/support.

I get it from my mother, thankfully it calmed down when I moved out. I tried to explain but it made no difference.

Not sure, maybe direct them to that website that the guy on TV talks about (John Kirwin? Or something? That famous dude that everyone except me knows).

Or try writing a letter/poem/drawing a picture you could show to them.

Hi

That sounds really rough for you and I am so sorry you are met with that response. I am not surprised you are hurt, but I am glad you have your T who can help validate how you are feeling and that its ok to feel they way you do.

I often wonder why people don't get it, if someone had a broken leg in plaster they wouldn't tell you to get over it and go running.

A good suggestion, perhaps direct that towards certain websites, email them the sites etc. Hopefully with some knowledge they may change their tune.

Feel for you
