CAMHS & Adult MH Service Questions

For those who've been to CAMHS and then moved on to Adult MH services.

I have a few questions (please answer with your personal experience):

1. Which have you found better CAMHS or Adult & why?

2. What is different in Adult?

3. Would you say Adult was more understanding/supportive/caring/helpful than CAMHS or the same?

4. What happened when you first when to Adult services after being to CAMHS?

Any other comments:

--------------

I'm going to Adult soon and I just want to hear other peoples experiences.

Although I can understand your concern at changing services (I really was nervous!), how would you feel if someone replied with a negative experience of adult services? Would that put you off?

Services are different in different areas & I just really wouldn't like one person's difficult experience to make you approach the changeover to adult services negatively.

I hope I haven't offended you.

I had a negative experience when I went to my assessment the other week with adult services, but I agree with stop! hammer time, services are different everywhere, I don't think it'd be helpful to put you off by saying how someones individual experience was negative and impacted them, give your services a try and stay open minded love.

Although i agree all services are different, you just have to give them a fair chance, I love answering questions :D

1. Which have you found better CAMHS or Adult & why?
Adult, by far. I wasn't mature enouhg to handle therapy at CAMHS and there's was no trust because of who much they involved my parents. In adult servies, you're more in charge of yourself, and hopefully more able to manage treatment.

2. What is different in Adult?
Less involvement with parents/carers, if that's what you want. Different treatments avaliable possibly.

3. Would you say Adult was more understanding/supportive/caring/helpful than CAMHS or the same?
not sure yet, you would expect adult to be less caring really, but i haven't found that.

4. What happened when you first went to Adult services after being to CAMHS?
CAMHS were useless and failed to properly refer me so i had to get a refferal from my GP, i was re-assessed and now waiting to be reffered to the treatments that were discussed in the assessment.

I think it depends on who you are and who you get. There will be someone in adult services that you can form a rapport with and can help you through, they're just sometimes quite difficult to find. I don't know who I prefer and honestly, I cannot gain an adequate opinion from my experience. I had a bad one with CAMHs, granted, and haven't had such a great one since but that might be more to do with me (though CAMHs was not)?

Give it a chance, you are going to be transferred whether you want to or not, I'm guessing, so go in with an open mind and prepare for what might be hard. It will be difficult getting to know someone again but it can work out for you.

Take care, love, you know where I am.

So far, I would say CAMHS are better, because they were able to be more flexible with their resources, they dont need to refer you anywhere else, like for therapy for example, it was all inclusive with in their team. whereas adults services they are more fragmented and you have to be referred from one team to another and assessed by them so there is the chance you could be turned down for a type of treatment that you need, which is very frustrating, but with saying that adult services have more variety with different teams to suit different needs

2. What is different in Adult?
I think others had said this but, there's less parent involvement and more treatment options

3. Would you say Adult was more understanding/supportive/caring/helpful than CAMHS or the same?
They're about the same

4. What happened when you first when to Adult services after being to CAMHS?
On my first appointment with adults services I met my new care coordinator, with my CAMHS care coordinator, it was like hand over from one service to another.

Usually, 3 months before transition you have your usual CAMHS meetings with the people from adults services present, so it more of gradual transition, but with me this didn't happen

Adult deffo ... Treat you like an adult .. With CAMHS , they always wanna involve parents and I'm pretty sure they broke confidentiality rules by dropping big hints . :@

Adult was SO much better for me. For a start, I was actually taken seriously, not told "oh, you'll just grow out of your insomnia, self-harm, mood swings and suicidal feeling". They looked at me as a human being, and treated me much more as an individual than a textbook. I finally got the medication and therapy I needed, although the wait lists were far longer on adult services, and I was messed around quite a bit with uni holidays and suchlike.. but still. CAMHS only really seemed to care about my parent's opinions, not my feelings, which is unhelpful when your parents are in massive amounts of denial. But yeah, not everyone gets this- I know people who got on really well with CAMHS, and didn't feel Adult was as personal. But it really depends on the area & the actual psych/therapist you get, as other people have said.

Wake me up before I change again
Remind me the story that I won't get insane
Tell me why it's always the same
Explain me the reason why I'm so much in pain.
