hey, im new so i dno if im doing this right.
so em it seems most peoples parents seem to find out anyway so should i get it over with and tell my family the now ?
my mum im not so worried about cos we dont really get along anyway but my grandparents practically brought me up and were really close, i dont want to dissapoint them. i dont want them to think they failed or anything but at the same time i know i cant stop this by myself.
i tried going to the doctor but she just told me it wasnt uncommon in girls my age and gave me a leaflet so i dont know what to do.
sorry if this too long or doesnt make much sense, any advice would be good.
If you think telling somebody would help you, it would probably be a good idea to talk to them about it. That's something really hard to do... it's a wonderful accomplishment to consider it :) It's also really good you tried the doctor. I wish she would have helped a bit more... sounds like she was belittling the problem a bit :/
I hope you're doing alright :) And, welcome to RYL- always feel free to send a PM if you need anything or want to chat
*hugs and love*

We are male and female. We are artists, athletes, and students. We have depression, PTSD, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, or maybe no diagnosis at all. Some of us were abused, some not. We come from all walks of life and can be any age. We are every race or religion that you can think of. Our common link is this: We are in pain. We self-injure. And we are not freaks.
i would tell them. for me, it releived some of the pressure of trying to keep it a secret. and while the first few days after were really rough on all of us, my parents turned out to be alot stronger than i expected. and alot more help than i expected as well. also, if you get your parents involved, they can probably get you more help than you can get on your own.
when you tell them, you can give them some information from reputable sources (so they feel confident that its correct) to help them understand more. you can make sure to emphasize that it wasn't their fault, and that you aren't trying to blame them or make them feel guilty, but that you trust them enough to share this and want their support and love.
this is my magical medicine cabinet. Left to right they contain: courage, hope, calmness, and strength.
The magical part: They NEVER run out, so borrow some any time you want.
Everything comes out in the end. Perhaps if you tell your family, they'll be able to help you get better. And as mentioned above, less lying and secret keeping, it's so time consuming it will probably be a weight lifted off your shoulders :) Good Luck

I found that the longer I left it, the worse the problem got. Also, because I left it so long, my family were more hurt when they did find out than they would have been if they found out sooner.
Best of luck, and PM any time xx
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
In my family only my mom and my cousin have found out (A lot of my friends know and it got round my entire year at school the first day I did it because I didn't realized how red my entire lower arm was going to turn out to be when I only SI the wrist). My mom found out like 6 months in. I didn't tell her and wasn't prepared to tell her either. And due to the fact all she saw were cuts she just went into a panic attack and cried herself to sleep.
This actually caused me not to sleep at all that night. She still isn't aware if it is SI or if it was someone physically bullying me because I refused to tell her at all.
My cousin (they are female) found out about 3 months ago. Due to the fact she is also a SI she more or less just had a go at me for having a go at her for complaining about her showing her scars. But then continued to ask when I started, what I used and questions like that. She's more or less didn't care and told me to do it just suggested I hide it extremely well with the family we got. If it wasn't for her I wouldn't have even considered it.
But I find that no matter what its not going to matter how long you wait to tell them. Its going to affect them the same. But for you in the long run its probably better to tell them sooner. It means you can get help and also the fact that your less likely to be hugely concerned around them, because they already know and they also know its unlikely for you to stop instantly.
You're better than this. Breathe in. Breathe out. It'll be okay. I promise. Just don't forget to smile :)
The funny thing is,
nobody really ever knows how much
anybody is hurting.
We could be standing next to somebody,
who is completely broken,
and we wouldn't even know.
