Asking to swap back to a med you've been on??

I just posted in someone elses thread about Sertraline. Now i was put on this for my wretched thought processes and then a month later i was hospitalised and put on citalopram which i think is like taking smarties to me. My thoughts are a lot worse recently and im consistantly looping over and over the same things, my flashbacks cripple me because they go on so long and then my mind is crippled by thoughts that come with it (voices dont help this either) i was told that i have obsessive thought processes which is why they're so bad. When i get in this process it can take days before i come out of it and recover and then it starts over.. its can be because i have to walk the dog and there are people about, a flashback at the moment my mums treating me bad and putting thoughts in my head because she knows it triggers me and it can be something like shopping and what people think of me... Last week is a good example, i was so wound up over a college interview (im 18 dropped out of college twice, been admitted and only a reference from unit school which was aweful so yeah.. all that stuff) i didnt sleep for nearly two days and as i cocked up the interview all i could do was think and fall asleep when exhaustion took over, i started thinking on wednesday, interview was friday didnt recover untill this morning. A big thing at the moment is there's a huge investigation in my area over a ring that could have been my abusers and my heads wound up over all of it..

So much is pulling me down.. i want to try sertraline again as its supposed to be good for obsessions as it only had a month trial before i was taken off it, could i ask to try it again?? If not id appreciate any information on what could help such obsessions and looping thoughts???

Hi,
You can always discuss your wishes/thoughts about meds with a health professional and they should take them into account.
From your story there are a few things worth considering:
-Why did you stop taking sertraline if it was working?
-The dose of citalopram you are currently taking - I think you need quite a high dose for obsessive thoughts.
-How long you have been taking the citalopram - it takes a while to have an effect.

Yeah, so basically mention it to your Doc and it may or may not be the right move for you.

Always seem to get things just that little bit wrong.

I have switched back on to meds I was on before, you just have to ask your doc and discuss the options, there could have been a reason why you went off it but if not I don't see why they wouldnt let you? xx

I have done this before too, it's certainly reasonable especially if you feel your medication is currently not working. I say go for it, and I hope it is helpful for you! Just outline your case with who-ever prescribes them for you and hopefully they'll be responsive (you, afterall, are the patient who is taking the stuff and feeling the symptoms). If they are not responsive though, ask them way and try and work through it - don't give up.

I ended up getting my GP to prescribe my meds because my psychiatrist was so bent on this specific one that wasn't working for me. So it is so worth seeking out one that you feel will help.

xx
