Everyone thinks its something different...

Nobody I go to seems to agree on whats wrong with me, my family doctor though I had borderline personality and sent me to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist thinks I have may ADD and I may have Borderline and told me my psychiatrist from 3 years ago though I had PTSD, he sent me to a psychologist. The psychologist doesn't think that anything is wrong and that I should just get a job then move out and my life would fix itself he also mentioned that once I stopped cutting my scars would probably be completely faded in a few years, now he is sending me to get my IQ tested and to check for any learning disabilities and that type of thing "just to be sure". Then after that I'm being sent to see the psychologist again, then the psychiatrist again to get the results of my assessments.

Anyways, have alot of you had this happen to you where they keep sending you to different people who all say you have something different? It's really frustraing, it feels like they'll never find out whats wrong and I'll just keep shuffling through people giving me new tests and more theories. All I wanted was maybe to see a therapist or something, I didn't expect to have do all this.

I really didn't like the psychologist, he gave me trouble about not knowing much about my dad even though my dad left when I was 5 and stopped contacting us quite a few years ago...so how am I supposed to know what his current job is and if he has had any mental health problems in the last few years and how he did in high school? Apparently to him a past serious suicide attempt and 5 years of cutting aren't problems, starting to get suicidal thoughts again isn't a problem either...I just need to get a job, move out and be completely independent. Then when he left me in a room right across the hall from his office with the door open to do some question sheets he came back in after a few minutes and asked if I was going to "slash myself", I said no and I meant it. Then he got a stapler and letter opener off the desk, took them and said "well I'm going to take these anyways." in a tone that said he totally didn't trust me. Ugh! I just really didn't like that guy at all.

Sorry for ranting, but that guy just really annoyed me.

yep, he sounds crap, can you go to someone else instead? Did you like any of the other people you've seen?

It can take time for a diagnosis, but you need some support in the meantime (and anyway, a dignosis is just a guide to treatment, you are still a unique individual and need someone who will respond to you as an individual)

I would ask to change to a different psychologist. Your current one is sounding very unprofessional. I am not an advocate of the 'get up and go on' methodology of dealing with things - and frankly find it disgusting to hear from a psychologist.

I understand how frustrating it can be to have diagnosis tossed around while you are stuck in the middle, the key here is knwoing that they are given as a means of knowing what treatment to give you in the first instance. Not as a 'you are this and nothing else is possible'. It can take a very long time to reach a formal final diagnosis. Do, therefore, try to keep going with it and state your case as many times as is needed to get them to listen.
