I am new, but I was on another website and saw a link to an article on self-injury by a researcher/psychotherapist who really understands. I showed the article to a friend who struggles to understand self-injury, and I think she gets it now... at least more than she did.
I like this article, partially because the writer isn't someone (as far as I can tell) who has engaged in self-injurous behaviour but has just studied it, yet still manages to understand and put everything into words. Thanks for posting it.

I read it, I think it's a great artical. It's handy to have this sort of thing to show family/friends if they have difficulty understanding the reasons/cause of si.
What people are telling themselves right before they cut is nearly unbearable to hear. I'd imagine their mind is shouting things at them like "You're a worthless bitch. How could anyone love you? You disgust me."

woah
i haven't read much else about SI that has been so true! most of the time, authors who write about it tend to talk about people who SI as being sorta like outsiders. I was astounded at the quote RAWWR posted... that's almost exactly what i'm thinking when i'm in the moment
thanks for posting this

We are male and female. We are artists, athletes, and students. We have depression, PTSD, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, or maybe no diagnosis at all. Some of us were abused, some not. We come from all walks of life and can be any age. We are every race or religion that you can think of. Our common link is this: We are in pain. We self-injure. And we are not freaks.

This.
Really good article. I'm surprised how well she understood and explained it.

Besides her apparent dislike of animals, I think it's a nice article =) Almost made me cry though... I don't think anyone's ever understood me so well.
oh, interesting that you thought she didn't like animals... i didn't take it that way.... hm. i just thought she was saying they can't talk like us so they probably aren't thinking things like "you are bad" like we think
Agreed I think she was just on about ability to reason and whatnot. I love animals though :)

I read the linked post and most of her other posts. I think it's great that she is trying to understand self harm. I also think she's doing a fairly good job at it. Hopefully she can get the word out, because a lot of the "professionals" I have dealt with really don't get it at all.
