Bank Holiday Entitlement?

this is probably the wrong place for this thread, but I just wondered if anyone had any expereince/knowledge with this.

Regarding the Royal Wedding Bank Holiday in April...my boss seems to think she does not have to give us the day off paid. She has told us we have the option to vote to either take it as annual leave, have an unpaid day off or open as usual and do "chores" (I'm in a day nursery by the way)

I checked it online and it seems to be down to how the contract is worded. Well, from what I can tell my contract entitles me to the bank holiday as much as any other bank holiday. It says 20 days plus applicable bank holidays.
Have I interpreted this right?

I'm reluctant to take it up with my boss just yet in case I'm wrong and she's thinks I'm disloyal/causing trouble or incase she changes our contracts before the event.

Anyone in the know?

I haven't got any experience/personal knowledge of this so I probably won't be much help at all. I had a look at the CAB website which says employers aren't legally required to give emplyee's Bank holidays off & that if they do they give employee's the day off they don't have to pay them. It then goes on to say that employees contract of employment may give them the right to time off work on bank/public holidays.

I personally think that you've interpreted your contract right; I'd certainly interpret it that way. Hopefully someone with experience of this will come along & give a better reply than me :)

We get Bank Holidays off, but, depending on the days we work, have to make up some hours in lieu. It sort of sucks!

We don't work bank holidays at my work and we have been given to royal wedding off paid.
I think it is down to the company you work for.

Thanks, I know it's a long shot to expect someone to be able to tell me exactly what is what lol, but since you interpret my contract the same way I do makes me feel a bit more confident about it.

I'm going to discuss this with some trusted colleagues tomorrow and see what they think.

It seems like a silly issue to be bothered about, but since I have a young child and work full time, every day off counts! Plus, you know, no one likes getting walked all over

Think it depends on the employer - I don't get any bank holidays off, nor do I get paid extra for them, but I knew when I took on the job that my hours would be flexible and often unsociable.

I would interpret your contract the same way you have. It is a bank holiday, your contract says you get bank holidays off so yeah!
