I'm not new to RYL I've been here a while (really remember how long...but have been reading and posting through all my ups and downs anyway maybe this past year or two...)
So I never really scroll this far down but I wasn't sure wha 'vets' meant...was it for people who had been members for so many years etc...but I'm fguring out now that this means basically...older people? lol :)
I'm 24, not considerably old but my fist memory for SH was from when I was 10 years old. The way I see it there's kids posting in the other forums that are the same age as the number of years I've experienced SH lol. Soooo I guess that makes me feel old! :)
After having read a little bit around this forum i seems to me like I might be able to relate a little better to the folks here....don't get me wrong I love to read every forum but if I can see other adults experiencing what I have or relating to how I feel I think it would be interesting.
I mean I'm settled down, have a good job, pay bills, thinking about marriage and babies etc etc....wodering how a history of self harm and mental health issues would effect my chances of adopting children...realistic things I wat to do in life. My biggest problem is no longer that I had a fight with my mum etc...because I get on quite well with her lol.
Just wondering how SH fits into adult life....because that's where I am and I've never spoken to anyone else who's been the same really....I havent harmed (by cutting) in about...6/7 months I think? I go in phases every couple of years with it....tatlast phase lasted about a year that's the longest ever...was a rough time but I'm out the other side of it and feeling ok :)
I wonder will I still do this or want to when I'm older than I am now...maybe when I have a family etc... I don't think it's something you ever 100% recover from doing I think it just is part of you. But it's not what defines you. It's just there from time to time.
Anyways...hi everybody :) just taking a little venture into new territory! :)
I recently discovered vets too, And I can tell you its been an amazing thing so far! everyone is so nice {solo especially :)} and so helpful!!
I'm glad to hear that you are doing so well right now after going through another cycle in the phase! I believe as you that one never fully recovers in the sens that it is alaways a part of you, but I do also believe that recovery to the extent of leaving the mindset and the physical SH behind is very possible. Good luck!!

Don't look behind you, you aren't traveling that direction.
Hi whynotsmile. Glad to see you found the vets! I'm 39 ahd have had cycles of s/h since I was 16. I find it difficult slotting the s/h part of me into life. I guess everyone thinks it's a "young" thing and that I should "get over it." I have a 19 year old daughter and it destroys her to see me this way. I have bipolar too. I can hold down a job, run a home, be a wife and mother, but I have days, weeks maybe, where this is too hard to take anymore. My family and real friends understand that it's me. Others are not so nice! It doesn't get easier as you get older, but I have found that I'm not ashamed anymore like I was 20 odd years ago. I wear short sleeves, I joke about it, cos it's part of me, my life. I'm here to talk anytime. Take care. xx

Hi Whynotsmile, welcome to vets.I'm Claire aka Anarchymummy.I'm a 23yr old single mum but also started self-harming at a young age (8/9) and although now physically "free" from self-harm,the thoughts and processes come in cycles for me as well, though I have greater control now.
As Hannah said I think "that one never fully recovers in the sense that it is always a part of you, but I do also believe that recovery to the extent of leaving the mindset and the physical SH behind is very possible. Good luck!!"

Hello and welcome. This is pretty much exactly how I see self harm and how it fits into my life. I think when you start to accept that by this stage it's not a teenage phase, and we won't neccessarily grow out of it, then you can start to accept that it is part of you and that you have to put it aside as much as possible and live your life despite it. And yes, it will rear its ugly head from time to time, but that doesn't mean you can't live a good life alongside it.
Even as the stone of the fruit must break
that its heart may stand in the sun,
so must you know pain.
There are only two ways in which one can live their life. One is as though nothing is a miracle, the other is as though everything is.
Hiya. I'm also a recent discoverer of Vets. I did wonder whether I'd be too young, but it's so so nice to have people around that are the same kind of age, and older. As you say, the other forums are wonderful too, but in a similar way to you, I don't really know / talk to anyone else of a similar age that understands and/or has been through these things, so it's at once refreshing and comforting to see the people on here. I'm 21, but feel quite a bit older and more mature too, having experienced the things I have.
So pleased you're doing well. That's amazing to hear, and to see you're feeling good about giving it up too is fantastic - well done you. Feel free to message any time. And keep strong, you're doing so good. xx
