I call it dreaming... they call it madness.

One assumes it's because people who are in a manic phase may pose a threat to themselves or engage in embarrassing/risky behaviour which they may later come to regret.

This link has a story about a parent looking after a child who suffered from mania: http://seethewhiteelephants.blogspot...led-mania.html

Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money.
They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with.
Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Oh gosh. Many, many reasons. Hypomania isn't too dangerous for self and/or others, but the problem with even that is that it tends to be followed by a 'crash'. I have done so many shameful and embarrassing things when manic. It's making me squirm just writing this. Mania can turn psychotic and become extremely dangerous and/or unpleasant. And, for me anyway, the higher the high, the worse the depression afterwards.

Also, not eating and sleeping for a prolonged period of time can lead to profound exhaustion and illness. In the past, before effective treatment was available, some people did in fact die from exhaustion.

There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who, when presented with a glass that is exactly half full, say: 'This glass is half full'. And then there are those who say: 'This glass is half empty'.
The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: 'What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!

OK fair point. Thanks for the replies.

But someone who's manic doesn't care about that stuff right? ...so how do you convince a manic person to come down? Or how are they supposed to control it in any way?
