Ok, i'm planning an overnight trip to paris for me and a friend looking for something cheapish but comfortable. Does anyone have any sugestions or places to avoid for hotels/places to see or nice french cafes?

Thanks :D

I've heard about some fab hostels in Paris... Er, give me a minute.
I don't know if hostels are your thing, but they're always pretty fun and full of life (and cheap!).

As for places to see; if you're going overnight, maybe try to get a two day metro pass. It just makes travel so much easier! Try to go up the Arch du Triomphe if you can; it's a lot of stairs, but it's so worth it - and you don't get anywhere near the queues you get with the Eiffel Tower. The Latin Quarter has always been pretty fun and full of life when I've been. I've also always preferred the Musee D'Orsay to the Louvre when I've been, but I'm not sure if that's just me :P Montmartre is pretty fab to wander around, but watch out for creepy people tying bracelets around your wrists. How are you getting there? If you haven't sorted that yet, I totes recommend the Eurostar as it just gets you right into the city centre (from LDN city centre) in under two hours, which totally beats check-in queues. But ignore me if you've already sorted that. :)

Both the Rough Guide and Lonely Planet do pretty amazing budget guides to various cities; maybe it'd be worth checking them out?

Hope you have an amazing time! I love Paris; I've been four or five times at least now, and it's just so vibrant and full of all sorts of amazingness :)

ETA: Hostelwise, I remember hearing good things about the Peace and Love Hostel, and St. Christophers (although that's pretty much guaranteed to be okish, since it's St. Chris') - and I think we've stayed in Les Trois Poissons and Grand Hotels des Gobelins before, both of which I remember were decent enough :)

Have a great trip!

Yes do! I was only little and went once with my dad and just have this petrifying memory of my dad about to almost kill this man tricking me into buying bracelets. Not good!

Hope you have a lovely little time though and I will see if I can remember any gems.

The Mole was bewitched, entranced, fascinated. By the side of the river he trotted as one trots, when very small, by the side of a man who holds one spell-bound by exciting stories; and when tired at last, he sat on the bank, while the river still chattered on to him, a babbling procession of the best stories in the world, sent from the heart of the earth to be told at last to the insatiable sea.
Wind in the Willows.

Thank you. I'd found a couple of hostels but most of the write ups weren't great so i will take a look at those :) Taking eurostar which i'm hoping will be fun. I'll watch out for strange people with bracelets.

The best time to book the eurostar is when the tickets first go on sale which i think is about 12 weeks before travel.
When me and my dad went we booked a hotel from Alpa rooms I think it was £60 for the two of us and was close to the Eiffel tower.
If you like Italian food there is a great one about a ten minute walk from the Eiffel tower and fairly cheap.

This happens in Italy on the Spanish steps and such, except they tie it round your finger there 0.o

Holy cow I want to go to Paris baaaad. I think its from watching every stage of the Tour de France for the last 5 years (I dream about the Col du Tourmalet haha). At least I can say I flew over Paris at 35,000 feet - not even Victor Hugo did that lol

I found Paris a bit overrated. Watch out for the roads. At some point you will need to cross one and the drivers are all a bit crazy.

Sounds like Rome (I have been to that one). I never did get comfy putting out my hand and expecting traffic to stop

try looking up hostels in Paris, cheaper then a hotel and always good for a night or two. and look up the hostel, make sure they have a good reputation.

Lol. I didn't find Rome or Florence that bad, but I do remember being almost murdered in Naples! My mum used to push me out in front of the road because she thought that cars would stop for an 18-year-old girl, when they wouldn't stop for a 48-year-old woman or a 14-year-old boy, haha.

My God, I think this this like the first time ever I'm finding myself agreeing with you, and I'm slightly horrified. It is overrated, however, its still good enough to go for a couple of days. Overrated is not equal to total crap. When we went, we stayed in a hotel a stones throw from Gare du Nord, and it must have been cheap seeing as Chris took me there on a McDonald's wage. Just shop around online and always read reviews, its easy to find nice enough places on the cheap. Especially in January, which is when we went.

My memories of Paris consist of going on the French exchange and our teacher giving us this big speech about pickpockets on the underground and to make sure we kept our eyes open. During her speech a man bumped into her and stole her sandwiches from her bag, it felt as though irony was smiling that day.

Other than the pickpocket problem and dodgy suburbs which you shouldn't be visiting anyway, it's an interesting city to visit.
