Boyfriend maybe has a problem with alcohol

Hey all,

I have a question and hope someone can help me out, I'm not a pro on whats acceptable drinking behaviour and whats not (I don't drink and don't know too many people who do).

My boyfriend and I have been together 4 yrs and he's always REALLY liked drinking (university student) he's been out for 3 years and life sorta sucked for him, he didn't find a job and blamed his drinking on his depression. His drinking has slowly gotten worse/more and more. It use to be 6 pack every weekend, then it went to 8 pack every weekend, then 8-pack on friday night and another on saturday night, now it's a 12 pack on friday night and a 12 pack on saturday and a 8 pack on a holiday that falls on the weekday. I've confronted him many times about his drinking and he gets VERY defensive and calls me biast because I don't drink and therefor think no one shoudl drink (which isn't true). He also CANNOT have beer in the fridge without drinking it or hard alcohol.

He tells me there is no point in him drinking only a few beers, he can't get drunk off that and no point. When he drinks his emotions fly, he's either happy and stupid or just ANGRY like the hulk and starts smashing things (this is usually when he talks to me when drinking). We always fight when he drinks so I've taken the liberty to just not talk to him when he drinks and now he's getting angry at that (it worked for a couple weeks). He starts acting like there is nothing wrong with him and he's completely normal.

BTW - we're pretty darn poor right now (as we're both inbetween jobs) and he buys $50 worth of alcohol a week! But puts up a argument to buy groceries.

Normally he is a REALLY easy-going guy, very even tempered for the most part, but when he drinks, we fight cause he picks fights with me on purpose and I try to run away from the coversation and he just flips out even more and then I flip out then we go at it. There have been times where he's shaken me and looked like he was going to hit me.

The reason I'm asking all this is cause I need to know I'm not crazy and being completely unfair about his drinking habits.

This is tearing our relationship apart. Oh yah his parents are HEAVY drinkers, every night ans all weekend they drink and are basically drunk all the time.

I am currently:

It sounds like he has a problem - increasing amounts, alcohol that you can't afford, getting aggressive, not being able to be around alcohol without drinking it, drinking specifically to get drunk. They're all classic signs of a problem.

The reality is, you can't do anything about his drinking - it's a cliche but true that only he can do something. And the first step will be to admit that he has a problem.

There's an organisation called Al-anon for the relatives and partners of people with a drinking problem - they might be able to give you some advice and support.

Hi, I am sorry to hear aout your situation. I can totally relate as my partner also has an alcohol problem. It started the same way, a couple drinks and then a few until he now drinks a whole box if not more easily and whats worse is that he doesn't think theres anything wrong with drinking alone.

He was te sweetest guy when he didn't drink but i have noticed that since he hs started drinking regularly he is awful and moody even when he is sober. He picks fights over nothing and when I ignore him he starts saying really nasty things until I either cry (he gets angry when I cry and says there is nothing to cry about) or I snap at him and say somthing mean back.

Everything is always my fault and he doesn't have problem. I do not drink and that makes me boring and a "down buzz", he says he only be a dick hn he is drinking when I am around. I worry about him going out but I dread him coming home.

Im starting to think I'm mental, he is so nasty and unpredictable I dn't kno what to do.

Your not alone hun and yourboyfriends behaviour is not acceaptable, I really want the sober bf I knew back, he was so sweet and caring but now his drinking is out of hand I don't even know him but I don't have te strenghtto leave him :(
