Running away from my illness

Has anyone found exercise helps with their conditions?. I am a member of my local running club and recently ran the Loch Ness Marathon for the second time but finding the motivation is always a big problem with me. I want to do it, enjoy it when I'm out there. But over the past 3-4 months as my conditions have worsened I'd rather stare at the wall than train. On Monday after seeing my doctor again I made the decision to run everyday. So I pulled on the kit and out the door I went, its now Friday and I'm still going. It makes me feel like I'm achieving something everyday, even if the rest of it is spent in a depressive haze.

Yes. I do a lot of walking. I try to walk daily because I know it improves my mental health. I feel better in the fresh air and open space. It's not always easy though to keep motivated.

I know that exercise helps my mental health MASSIVELY but again I can't get the motivation, especially in the middle of winter? Any tips?

Stop thinking about what I want, what he wants, what your parents want. What do you want?

I think the trick is to try and do something each day. That way you get a continues log going and you don't want to break it. Also it can help distract from other stuff.

With me, the less I do the less I want to do, if that makes sense. Exercising everyday improves my mental health a huge amount, even if it's just walking the dog. I would encourage you to try and do something every day, and also get up on time. If I have a 'lazy morning', I find my motivation is much reduced compared to when I get up on time and do things! I feel much better about myself on days where I get up and keep myself busy.

There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who, when presented with a glass that is exactly half full, say: 'This glass is half full'. And then there are those who say: 'This glass is half empty'.
The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: 'What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!

I love running! But find it very hard to get into any pattern, make any real progress. I know it is because of my current mindset, and this needs to change in order for my motivation towards running to change. It's just getting that motivation! So at the moment I try to at least go for a walk, fresh air hits your senses. Mikey that's true, I have been sleeping a lot throughout the day and not waking up until it's dark, then being wide awake until the early hours of the morning, yet accomplishing nothing because, although my sleeping/waking routine has changed my mind is still in 'its the middle of the night not time to be doing work' mode. Also agree on the less I do, the less I want to. Thanks for re-pointing out something to me I know already but needed to re-hear

Good luck with the progress the truth is love. I might start going running again after seeing this, thanks for posting :)

Managed 6 out of 6 today, even with all the snow. Felt like all I wanted to do was cry yesterday but got through the day and got up on time for my run then work.

Rubiks cube. Fingers crossed you can get back out there, even in this weather!

Aaaah such good advice, thanks so much for this thread. I know how good exercise is but often do struggle with motivation, but it's getting slightly better when I focus on how it will make me feel.

I'm so glad it's working for you and well done for going through with your run even though you felt sad, I hope you're feeling better. xx

I do kung fu, and ever since I started, I've felt so much better in the weeks I've had a class. I'd really recommend it to anyone! It's intense exercise, and builds confidence and strength. I've never been able to do things like running because of problems with my feet that give me a lot of pain, but I've found out I have a talent for punches, and I've got some real muscle on my arms now. The only problem is that the classes aren't always regular, and sometimes there are long periods when they're not on, and I feel noticably worse then.

I've just installed the couch to 5k program on my phone. Hopefully this will be my kick-start to getting back to running, and possibly do the Race for Life?

^^ That sounds like a really good idea! I'm planning to do Race for Life again this year, and it is really relaxing just going for a run sometimes - especially in summer when it's warmer early in the mornings. I used to go running at uni a bit, and it was so nice at about 6am when no one was around and all the baby rabbits were out (cheesy much, I know, but it's true!)

I do kickboxing now, and the exercise is so helpful. It lets you feel like you've achieved something, like you've worked hard at something, and you finish sessions just exhausted sometimes and aching for ages, but in a healthy way. It's good for confidence too, it really does help. And sparring is amazing for stress release, you can't spar and think about anything else at the same time, so you just completely relax for a while and focus on what you're doing, and it's so good. I would recommend it to anyone. :)

I used to run loads but I've got problems with my knees so I tend to walk, weightlift and do my kickboxing exercises. However I've been sectioned on a secure unit for three weeks (I only moved to the open ward last Monday) so exercise was difficult and that was the last thing on my mind

PM me if you want a PDF copy of the ICD-10 or the Mental Health Act 1983/2007. I ALSO HAVE THE DSM-V BOOK and am a pharmacology student.

I have a visual impairment / neurological problems so I need people to type in clear text and no funny fonts. Also excuse any typos, my vision blocks things out.
I have autism and have problems communicating, PMs included.
Just becasue I type well doesn't mean I speak well. I am only part time verbal.
