Mirtazapine, given the wrong dosage

hi all,

I was put on Mirtazapine a few months back, and a few weeks ago my psych upped it from 15mg to 30mg. I've only just noticed that the percription i recieved from the pharmasist for the 30mg dose is actually 15mg. I don't know what to do about it? I coudl double up but i dont think i've got enough left to do that, this close to christmas I will struggle to get a drs appointment (though I have one next tuesday to discuss blood resutls, I could do it then?

gah. I dont know how this happened. and feel stupid for not checking the packet.

there's no harm in asking when you've got your next appointment to get your blood results

You could double them, it's what I did until I got the 30mg tablets, or you could go to your Pharmacy & ask if they could change the packet.

I'll just echo what other people have said, if I was me I'd double up the dose so you're still having the same dosage and then go to your GP and ask for a new prescription. Or you could call your psych to ask for a new script. Either way I can't see there being a problem with it.

If it was the pharmacys mistake id check there first.

If it was the psychiatrists mistake then your gp will have recieved a letter from the psych so they will be able to issue you another prescription if you double it up.

The pharmacy probably file away prescriptions and keep them, in fact I'm pretty sure they do.
This happened to me apart from I was given double the dose for double the amount of time it said so I just broke the pills in half (they were sleeping pills and I was told to double up if I needed too so most of the time I just used them without breaking them up) But I can understand that your in a completely different situation...
My advice would be to phone up your psych and tell them and then they will be able to arrange another prescription that you can pick up from their reception or something, that's what mine does sometimes when I get a psych that's not sure of something so has to ask my proper psych.

Pharmacies do file prescriptions as far as I know, it sounds like a dispensing error if you are certain the script said 30mg.

You should go back to the pharmacy and ask them to pull up your pharmacy records. I would tell the psychiatrist/ their receptionist and ask them to issue another prescription so you have it for next time whatever happens.

On the box do you have what the pharmacist prescribed cause if it has the date and the dosage you could double up and show it to your gp as proof?

Does that make sense?

That sounds like a good idea to me if you have enough to do that till Tuesday or you could even ring the surgery/psych beforehand just to explain things if you wanted to get it sorted [i suffer chronic anxiety so for me i like/need to get things like this sorted pretty quick as ridiculous as it sounds!].

i am on Mirtazapine 45mg and taking two of the 15mg tablets sounds fine to me till Tues if your prescribed dose is meant to be 30mg and you have enough to be able to do that for now.

Whether a pharmacy could do anything i think will depend on whether they still have the prescription and whether it was a dispensing error. If it wasnt and it was a GP error then from my experiences i think it will be very unlikely they can do anything but nothing to lose by contacting them if you need to.

Dont feel bad about this.It easily happens and it wasnt your fault - it was an error made by the GP/Pharmacist and you should give yourself credit for having noticed it now and trying to sort it out!

Also i hope the Mirtazapine at the 30 mg dose begins to help you more too.

Take care for now and good luck.

xx xx

i do not always manage to be around but i wish you all the very best - love and luck to you all!

are you from the UK? at my practise, you can ask for repeat prescriptions over the phone, and then collect the paper at reception.
