I'm just curious about this. Why do you have to put a reason in there? Who sees it? What happens to it once you delete it? Does it just go into thin air?
As explained by Emily, the reason for deletion can be seen by moderators so that we know why it was deleted, and the post doesn't *pop* away it still remains and mods can see it if needed.

I've never put a reason for deleting my threads. I didn't know you had to, I thought it was optional.
I didn't know that they stayed within the system either :/.
Hard deletions remove a thread/post from the system. They are rarely used and a limited number of people can do this I assume. (I can only soft delete where i have mod powers)
Soft deletions are the common sort of deletions. The thread/post is removed from the public but it is kept on the server. Any person with mod powers on a board can soft delete any thread on that board. In addition, you can soft delete any post/thread you created.
A de facto deletion is when a thread is moved off the public boards to a private board. This is mostly happens during a moderation case.
Then wear the gold hat, if that will move her;

I must have you!"

I'm curious why would they do a hard deletion (if you can tell me)? I thought pretty much everything you post on the internet remains somewhere accessible to someone forever.
Stereotypes are the epitome of human laziness.

Oh, it does. It's still stored, but it's removed from most publically accessible sources; from my experience, we've hard deleted things when, for example, we've had new mods in and we've wanted to remove the conversation about whether or not we should appoint them (as there's often quite a lot of debate and quite a lot of discussion on their positives/negatives, which we obvs. don't want them to see).
It remains accessible to somebody; just not every/anybody.

I think our last one ran in the neighborhood of 3-5 pages

I only put a reason when I'm editing or deleting someone elses post, because what I write in that box gets sent to them in a PM or is visible at the bottom of their post so they can see what i've done.
Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…
you once called your brain a hard drive, well say hello to the virus.
Yeah, I think it mainly says you need it so that people with modding powers remember to put in a reason when they delete threads as, like Sarah says, whatever gets put in there gets sent to the user who's thread/ post it was. You don't necessarily NEED to put a reason in there; it doesn't stop you deleting something if you don't, HOWEVER, it can sometimes help mods to know, say if there's been bullying or whatever going on and stuff and then we could look into it and see what's happened even if it hasn't been PRd.
And I don't have the power to hard delete. I used to, then I can't remember what Harley changed but it was at the same time that FAAs stopped getting emails saying there were PRs for the FAF, and I lost the ability to. It is a useful tool plainly because if you're in a team board you tend to have modding powers (to some extent) in that board. This means everyone with access there can see threads that have been soft deleted. And so yep, it mainly comes into use when you're adding new people so then you can get rid of threads re the people you're adding (and also a couple of others if you don't want people to know such as I've had a number of personal threads on the FA Team board in the past and deleted them as I didn't want the person/ people we were adding at that point to see) but there isn't a use for it in the main really.
