Seeking veterans' participation in self-harm research
Please note that I have received the moderators' permission to post this.
Also please note that this post relates to the same research advertised in the self-injury forum. Please do not do the survey twice.
Griffith University
A Study of Deliberate Self Harm
(Protocol number PSY/B3/10/HREC)
Hello, my name is Andrea Kittila and I am a graduate student of psychology at Griffith University in Queensland, Australia. For my research I am looking for people aged 18 years and over who have deliberately hurt themselves at least once in the last 12 months and who are interested in taking part in my study of deliberate self harm. This study will further researchers’ understanding of the feelings that trigger self harm, the functions of self harm, and the emotions of people who engage in deliberate self harm.
I am aware that members of online groups may have been contacted by people who appear to be posing as health professionals, or whose requests raise suspicion regarding the purpose of the research. Consequently, I would like to emphasise the following points:
I am conducting this research as part of my PhD degree in psychology, being undertaken at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia.
The chief investigator (Dr Penelope Davis) is my PhD supervisor, and has had many years’ experience in conducting, supervising, and publishing research.
The research has been approved by Griffith University’s ethical review board.
The survey does not mention any pharmaceutical companies or treatments.
The survey does not ask any questions about your identity or address, and your responses cannot be traced to you.
The survey does not attempt to involve you in any groups, financial schemes, or further research.
Participation will not cost you anything (other than the cost of using the internet).
We expect that your participation will take between 25 and 45 minutes.
It is possible that participating in this study may cause emotional distress. For this reason, we advise that people who are having difficulty managing their self harm may not wish to participate in this study. All participants will receive an information sheet that provides details of a website that provides support for people who engage in self harm; we advise that you make use of this website if your participation causes you distress.
Ethical conduct of this research
Griffith University conducts research in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research. If you have any concerns or complaints about the ethical conduct of the research project you should contact the Senior Manager, Research Ethics and Integrity, on (07) 3735 5585 if in Australia or research-ethics@griffith.edu.au
IP addresses (which can identify the computer you are using) will not be collected when you complete the survey, so there is no way that responses can be traced to you.
If you would like more information about the current study, please feel welcome to contact Dr Penelope Davis (the chief investigator) at p.davis@griffith.edu.au, or me (Andrea Kittila, the researcher) at a.kittila@griffith.edu.au.
Please note that the survey may take up to 45 minutes to complete, and the you are not able to save your answers and return later (this is because the survey site does not save IP addresses, for your complete anonymity). So, before you start the survey, it might be a good idea to ensure that you have enough time to finish it.
Please do not start the survey and then return to it and do it again.

Reason: The trigger labels guidelines were updated a couple of months ago and so I have removed the label added to your title xox
I saw this posted in one of the other subsections. I tried to complete it before but realised it was quite hard....I think you have to not be having a bad day to complete it. I gave up, sorry, I was probably one of those partly filled forms you mentioned in another post. I will try to complete it again a bit later though. Sorry if my partial form screwed up any of your research and good luck with it!
Thanks for giving it a go! Yes it is a bit full-on, isn't it? I might even add a statement to my post alerting people that it might take a while.
Something that I would like to try to avoid is people doing the survey twice. So, if you do decide to go back to it later, you are welcome to let me know what you wrote for some of the answers previously. That way I might be able to find and remove your incomplete survey. But no problem if you'd rather not tell me what you wrote. No worries at all
Just took it! I was brutally honest! Hope it helps with your research!
"You're in the bathroom carving holiday designs into yourself, hoping no one would find you.But THEY found you,and they took you,and you somehow survived."
i did it but didnt fill in the explanation boxes. but i did answer all questions.
i did it because i want people who self harm to be better understood and not looked upon the way i was. i want there to be more compassion instead of shock no matter how severe or how small the harm is. i also want professionals to learn that self harm is not the illness, in my opinion, its a symptom of something much deeper.
Hello again everyone. I would like to say a big thank-you to everyone who has taken part in my research. I am still collecting data, and will be doing so for at least the next 3 weeks, so if you would like to participate and haven't already, there is still time.
As I mentioned in a previous post: Please note that the survey may take a while to do - some people may find that they do it in only 20 minutes; others may find that it takes an hour to do. Please do not start the survey unless you have one hour available to do it, because the survey site will not allow you to save answers and then return to the survey.
Also please note that this post relates to the same research advertised in the self-injury forum. Please do not do the survey twice.
Hopefully within a month I will be conducting one more phase of research. The exciting thing is that this research will have only one question! Yey! I will post more details soon.
Hi dollpart, thanks for your interest in my research. Yep, anyone who would like to see the results of the research can email me. Alternatively, they can say here on the forum that they would like to see the results, and I will record their username so that I can contact them later.
The results will probably be ready in a few months.
Shall I add you to the list of people who would like to see the results?
Kind regards,
Andy.

Reason: Edited to change "dollparts" to "dollpart".
Just completed the survey and I can't believe how wonderful I feel. In a strange sense of the word, I feel like there was actually some good that finally came out of our terrible secret we all share. If her research helps just one person, then we all deserve a pat on the back. cheers
Grace - don't feel bad! Of course there will be people who don't feel like doing the survey or who don't think they'll be able to concentrate on doing it - no problem
visibleMemories - I'm really glad that the survey felt worthwhile and that you felt good after doing it. Thank-you very much for telling me that.
Hello everyone, I am going to close this survey now, and finally get to work on analysing the responses! Within a couple of months I will send a summary of the results to people who indicated that they're interested.
Thank-you very much to everyone who took part in the survey or who was interested in it. I appreciate every single response and feel very privileged to have been able to read about your experiences. I am truly grateful to everyone for sharing their stories with me. I think I've said it before, but I'll say it again: You're all fantastic.
I am still collecting data for my other survey, which consists of just one question. This question is for people who have ever engaged in self harm in response to a positive emotion (happiness, excitement, pride etc), even if that positive emotion resulted from or led to a negative emotion. Information about this survey can be found here http://www.recoveryourlife.com/forum...d.php?t=159011
