I dont know if this has been brought up before but what do you guys think?
personally I dont think it is as I have been doing it since I was a little girl - long before I started to SH, and I have noticed that I tend to do it when I am bored and am not in anyway feeling like I want to harm myself
but my nurse yesterday tried telling me it was still classed as SH but I think it really depends on why and when you do it.... for me its just habit, its something I cant control or stop!!!
What about other people though?

r.i.p my beautiful girl jackie. i will love you always no matter what - 6/5/10
I think its why that makes it SI, just like pulling out hair can be SI, and eating disorders can be SI. It just depends why. If you pull out hair or pick scaps out of OCD or just a habit, then no, but if you do it to relaxe, to feel pain, then yes it is. If you have an ED because you want to lose weight then no, but if you have an ED because you know your unhealthy eating/noteating is hurting you and you want to hurt yourself that is SI.
Hope that makes sense, just my 2 cents
You will find that having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting. It is not logical, but is often true-Spock

Yeah I think it depends on why as well. Sometimes if I'm trying not to cut I'll pick at the scabs until I feel a bit more relaxed. I think that would be SI. But other times it's just a compulsion/habit where there is no real self-destructive motive.

I've always wondered the same thing... and i've been picking scabs since i was like 7 or 8 wayyyyyyyyyyy before SI.
I think (like stated before) it depends on why you're doing it.
Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, i think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat

technically, probably yes... the definitions ive seen often include interfering with wound healing, or that it leaves a mark for longer than an hour...
but then, it can also be part of OCD or skin picking and i know that i don't tend to think of my skin picking as "self harm" unless i'm purposely and conciously doing it. cause alot of times its just a nervous habit...
this is my magical medicine cabinet. Left to right they contain: courage, hope, calmness, and strength.
The magical part: They NEVER run out, so borrow some any time you want.
It depends on the reason you're doing it. I think all kids do that, and it isnt self-harming, but it can be classed as it wen you're older, depending on the reason. It's one of those things like pulling your hair or biting your nails compulsively, I guess.
I used to pick scabs all the time when I was younger, I think a lot of kids do. I personally wouldn't class it as self-harm, unless it's your 'method' of self-harm.
It depends on your intention. If you are just picking the scab out of habit to get it off, it may not be self harm. But the way I do it, I do it to reopen cuts and cause bleeding and pain...that would be considered self harm.

According to a certain policewoman I met, yes.. lol. But seriously, it is self-harm.. because you're physically harming yourself. You're interfering with a natural healing process. But not everyone who picks scabs does it with the intention of mentally harming themselves, a lot of people do this out of a nasty habit or because they're bored.
It's best not to pick scabs though.. especially after self-harm, seeing as it will scar a lot worse. I know from experience. >.<
