Career

Hi all. Glad to have found this place :)

Currently I'm a parent/carer and hubby works, but I want to go to Uni and sort out a career for myself, as I can feel my IQ dropping by the minute the longer I stay at home in spite of all the campaign/volunteer stuff I do.

Next year, natty will be starting nursery and I want to go back to school. I'm trying to decide what I want to study, it has to be something I can make a living at when I graduate. I am thinking along the lines of child psychology, social work, special ed teaching...

Just not sure what I want to do, I have a broad idea but that's about it. Definitely in the social sector working with mental health children and/or their families. Any thoughts or does anyone do this and want to tell me how easy/hard/risky/straightforward it is?

you could go to the uni you wanna go to and have an interview to discuss what you would like to do and they can suggest the course that is right for u

There is currently a massive shortage of social workers in this country, I think it's something like 15% of all positions are vacant. So that could be something to bear in mind.
Also if you wanted to become a psychologist, most clinical ones (ie who see patients) have PhD's, so going down that avenue would take considerably longer than the others.

Hmmm I would need to take on a path of education that would allow me to be fully qualified (I can do further courses later) within 4, maybe 5 years really so perhaps SW is the best way as that is 3 years here.

Thanks both, I think I will go to the Uni and have a chat, too... its nice to have a plan in place, keeps you aware of the fact that there is a future.

I study Applied Social Sciences, which covers Psychology, Sociology, Politics, and more. Its such a varied course that there are a lot of careers which you can do at the end of it, some being the things which you have listed as well as going into HR or the police.

Maybe have a look into that course?

Thanks BB, never heard of that course but it sounds like it could be ideal. I shall certainly ask about it! :)
