The future of canned food

  • Reporter: Jackie Quist
  • Broadcast Date: August 11, 2010
It is called the Candwich, a sandwich in a can, and it is set to become the world's latest fast food fad.

It is the brainchild of Utah businessman Mark Kirkland.

"It's just a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a year from now, you can open this can it will still be fresh and soft," he said.

"We'll have a pepperoni pizza, barbecue chicken, barbecue beef, French toast, and we're coming out with a cinnamon roll."

It is all perfectly edible at a year old.

"You remove the oxygen from the packaging," Mark said.

"With the packaging there's an oxygen absorber in the container in the can, you control the ph levels, you control the water levels and that's done with the recipes.

"So controlling those things no organism can grow if you do it properly."
Candwiches do not even require refrigeration, they can roll around your car for months.

They are also coming to Australia and can fit neatly into a vending machine.

"I have requests for them right now, so we will be shipping samples probably the first part of September," Mark said.

The face of Spam in Australia, Scott Martin, said canning has come a long way.

After 73 years, Spam is as popular as ever, reaping $7 billion a year in the USA and $20 million in Australia.

"The shoppers do love the pouches, they represent a good option to the cans," Scott said.

I think this is the future of canned food.
Food that cooks itself!
Can you only imagine the crap they put in them?

HotCans

Simply remove the rubber cap, pierce the holes with the included key, open the insulated can and gawp in ravenous anticipation as a totally safe exothermic reaction heats up your highly scoffable meal in about 12 minutes. We’ve heard of convenience food but this is ridiculous. Mmm…piping hot sausage and beans!

How do they stop the jam making the bread soggy in that year? =\
N i have a feeling i've seen those self heating meal things somewhere before - i can only hope the can is the thing that heats up so the food in it cooks as opposed to things being added into the food!

from the look of the diagram it's the inner layer of the can that heats up.

Yeah thats what i figured, kinda like the insulated layer in some flasks but with heating stuff in it? Still weird tho, and does it come with something pokey to make the holes? It should just come with a mini fork for poking and eating! lol

I saw a coffee drink in a convenience store one time that heated itself up.

Anyway, about the canned sandwich thing... I just don't think it's necessary. It's not that hard to make your own sandwich.

Little pokey thing to start the reaction is included. You have to bring your own fork.

I saw one of those canned coffee's once. Thought they were great, until I saw price compared to amount of liquid in them.

and I think the idea of the can is that you can put it in storage for days or weeks or months and then when you're hungry there's no waiting in line at Subway, or indeed any other sandwich making store

haha, me and mom both bought one of the coffee drinks. I got mine to heat up, she messed up hers and drank mine.

Yeah, I suppose I'd only have canned sandwiches for something like the end of the world as we know it or something.

Honestly, how lazy has the world become?

There are ready meals for the oven that take half an hour or so..clearly that's too long. Then ready meals for the microwave. Seven minutes? FAR TOO LONG FOR OUR BUSY SCHEDULES. Not to mention something like Rustlers which are ready made burgers (Take it out of the pack, pop it in the microwave, 70 seconds later, ping! Burger.) But oh god forbid should we lose 70 seconds of our precious time.

NOW, we grab a can and go.

Pretty soon they'll be making benches and other objects in the public place out of food so we can snap a piece off for our breakfast on the way to work. No need to even stop walking!

I'm gonna tap him like a maple tree. I'm gonna search him for some syrups. I'm gonna be having sex with him.
