psychosymatic

Does anyone know anything about psychosymatic symptoms, or conversion disorder???

I was just in the hospital for Od-ing. When I first woke up, I was really weak and dizzy and couldn't sit/stand/walk on my own. They had a neurologist see me and do a bunch of tests, but everything was normal. Then I started to develop a stutter. The doctors decided it was 'all in my head'... With a lot of practice (and bruises!!!) I am now able to walk normally, but I still have the stutter. I don't know what to do to get rid of it... While I was in the hospital, I actually had some of the nurses and other staff tell me I was faking it all... That I just wanted attention... But I believe it's real. I don't wanna be stuck with this stupid stutter!!! It's embarrassing!!! (No offense to those with stutters... But it's hard to suddenly devlop one in your 20's... People think I'm insane, which maybe I am!!!) It really hurt when those staff members told me I was faking... But I didn't know what to say to them, because there is no real reason for these things to be happening...

So I guess I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how to deal with this??? Cuz I am totally lost...

Hey there.

I'm so sorry you've had to deal with such things being said to you by professionals.

Could you go to your doctor & tell them about this & perhaps you could get a second opinion, or an assessment on this problem by a specialist?

Psychosomatic or not, it is causing you distress & it is a problem, that should be important but unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way & that can be very distressful, but you gotta keep fighting for help, it is out there & it can be sought.

I have always had psychosomatic issues. It runs in my family. Therapy helps me get a grasp on what's going on, and it is easing.
But. Psychosomatic problems are more complex than 'just in your head'. The mind and body interact in quite a complex way, and often the body has it's own language for things we find hard to speak in words.

I has psychosomatic kidney/liver pain/failure.
At times it can be really bad & it's always brought on by stress.
I'm not sure what to suggest but I understand how frustrating it can be.

Hi,
I'm so sorry they told you you were faking!
Psychosomatic or functional conditions are surprisingly common. It means that your brain is creating the symptoms but it doesn't mean you're doing it consciously. One of the big difficulties with these conditions is that there are very few medical specialists who deal with them - people fall between the cracks of neurologists and psychiatrists (just had a lecture on this actually). If you can have some therapy it will probably help, not sure what else you can do I'm afraid. Maybe your GP will have some suggestions?

I developed an awful problem in IP. I couldn't walk correctly, I had to use a walker to get around. I also developed a leg shaking thing and sometimes couldn't talk. I get headaches for no reason.

Honestly it is stress for me. The symptoms went away when my stress decreased. I think that talking to a therapist is the best way to go and finding ways to reduce your stress to anxiety level will be the best way to get rid of the symptoms.

Thanks for the advice guys... I really appreciate it... Some of the symptoms were subsiding, as I wasn't under much stress... But now that the stress is coming back, the symptoms are coming back... I hate this!!! I just wanna be normal... I guess I will try talking to my therapist about ways to control these psychosymatic symptoms... I just hope she can help... If you have any other suggestions, I'm open to them!!!
