So, who did this? i know I did and loved it. What various things did your den turn into? a cave? a rocket ship? share your childhood (or maybe grown up) stories of your various dens, what thye meant to you, how you built them and what thye became!
(there is a point to this thread bar nostalgia, though that is great too! so please reply)

We had amazing ones because our next door neighbour was a tree surgeon. We hollowed out a hole in the middle of his log pile and then "thatched" it with lleylandii, it was quite big as we could fit 6 kids in it!
We also had an amazing treehouse that was basically a wendy house balanced on the top of a 10ft tree trunk. That was awesome and when we had friends to sleep over we'd camp out in it. It had a little hatch at the back with a rope ladder and we could open that in the very early morning and see deer that lived by the stream near us.
We used to hang a blanket over the edge of bunk beds, and we'd pretend we were pirate hedgehogs, and the bunk bed was our ship. It was fun, until my little sister fell off the top bunk and my mum banned us from playing it!
And we'd drape cushions and blankets and stuff over the sofas and make dens there. Or if we had a big cardboard box (from a new telly or something), we'd play in that :D

My neighbours actually had a proper wooden treehouse thing in a tree. That was cool.
I had this climbing frame thing with a slide and you climbed up to what I can only describe as a tent like thing with plastic windows that you could hide in, or you could remove the tent bit (I think) and just sit on the canvas floor.

I remember as a kid, my brothers, sister, and I had the most epic fort ever. We just used branches, leaves, and moss and after I think about a month of building and working on it every day. It was huge, water proof, insulated, windows, had a table and chairs which we build, beds out of pine needles, and everything. Then the police destroyed it because of escaped prisoners hiding in the woods behind the house. 1 month building, 10 second gone, but it was cool seeing police officers with machetes in the yard.
frizzbob121 - thank you SO much for using the word pirate. I have a title for somehting in my head and there was one word missing and I couldn't rmeember it and pirate was it!

we had a treehouse, was just a few wooden palletts nailed together to make a floor and 3 walls in a tree, was realllly hard to get into that tree without a ladder! was a cool huge tree tho, we used to play udner it because the branches made it so that no one outside could see into it.
but we were really jealous of this empty hosue round the corner that had a realllllly cool posh tree house!
we also made sheet tents on the washing line, cusion dens at my nans and we had a wigwam my mum made.
I made my boyfriend's little sister an awesome fort a few months ago, it stayed up for a good few days, much to my boyfriend's mum's annoyance. I loved making forts, massive bedsheets were the best for it.

You gotta hope more,
then put your fingers in your ears and go,
"Blah blah blah blah!"
Me and my brother were always making dens.
Mostly inside with bed sheets, a chair and 1 or 2 clothes horses. With clothes pegs to hold it all together.
They were always just a cool place to sit and hide for me but I think my brother was more into making them rockets or whatever.
We did have a few outside ones too, including one in the garden which was just a little clearing in the middle of a bunch of trees and bushes with a chair in.
Me and my cousin and my grandad made a tree house in out old apple tree. It's still there but I think it's like rotting out of the tree now.
We always used to climb the like 30foot conifers at the back of out garden and like perch on the top and pretend we were like pirates. And we used to go into our under-the-floor bit in my house and play caving. And lots of other stuff...
Genrally I just used to climb alot of trees and throw myself out of them to be fair.

We used to make dens in random wood clearings out of cardboard boxes and old rubbish we found. But our parents said we had to dismantle them in case homeless people went to live in them :(
i had dozens of dens, most were built by digging pits then laying logs over then leaves then mud etc, so you ended up with a hole in the ground that you could climb down into the den. these dens were always used near the traps i used to set.
The hides i used to build for watching animals were normally built with walls made of thin sticks braced by thicker sticks set into the ground, the roofs were normally the same as the pit dens.
i was always trying to make new dens, i tried to make quite a few treehouses but only ever finished one, and that was only cos it was a great spot for shooting bunnies.
I tried and tried and tried and tried again and then just had to make my peace with the fact that I'm just not practical in any way shape or form. The best den I ever managed was tying branches with a piece of string. And even that fell apart fairly quickly.
EDIT:

Two chairs and a sheet, with cushions and duvets underneath and you have a den sorted.
Wait these types of dens count? I did manage a few of those.
