Cat gets Bionic feet

Link to Article on the BBC Bionic Feet for Amputee Cat

Although poor cat for losing his feet. Isn't it amazing how far science has developed.

Baha, I love the way the tape is so scientific :P
But that cat is so freaking cute ^w^

It didn't matter in the end how old they had been, or that they were girls,
but only that we had loved them and that they hadn't heard us calling,
still do not hear us calling them from out of those rooms where they went to be alone for all time,
and where we will never find the pieces to put them back together.

The money used to come up with the idea in the first place, research and stuff. I thought that if an animal is in that much distress because of a deformity like that then it would be put down.
It just seems a bit OTT to me.

would you say the same for humans? prosthetic legs and such.. He wasnt in pain he just couldnt move around, it would be cruel to end his life because he was int he wrong place at the wrong time. personally i think i think its a brilliant idea

No I wouldn't say the same for humans. That's kind of my point.

I don't think that its a waste of money.. but I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed. Before clicking on the link, I imagined a half cat half cyborg like thing, with massive robotic legs that maybe breaths fire. That would have been very cool.

The technology was designed for humans. It says it right there in the article.

I saw this little cat on tv... I say he is one lucky cat to end up being able to walk. My only worry is that the prosticies might cause him pain...and how would we know unless he is in great pain? Fantom pain is common in people who have had amputations. I just hope s/he is okay. The cat looked well on tv tho.

But it was used on a cat.

Heh. Nevermind. This doesn't feel worth getting into a proper debate about to be honest :P

Lucky cat; that's well above the current technology level for prosthetics. Hopefully he'll still be getting around well a year from now. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter for whom it was a success, just that it was.

Lily Lady, when I was young I had a cat who had to have one of his front legs amputated. It did affect him for awhile--enough to have us worried--but he adapted. Eventually he figured out that if he gave her the big eyes and waved his stump, he could have just about whatever he wanted from my sister, lol.

Yes, probably but people throw money away every day on pointless things.

The best thing about it, is that it opens doorways & new hope to human amputees - in which case I think the money is definitely worth it

I dont think it's over the top at all, it made a cat walk again.
Apparently he was fine apart from loosing his back legs.
So i think it was a good idea, if humans are allowed prothstetic limbs why shouldnt animals :)

Yes, but so many people are amputees, and many cannot afford prosthetic limbs, thus having to make their livelihood (aka, afford food/shelter) begging or through some other equally humiliating venture because they cannot afford healthcare and we spend our money buying prosthetic limbs for cats?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I just find it embarrassing that hundreds of impoverished people are already supporting my lifestyle, now I'm going to make them support the lifestyle of my freakin' pets as well?
