I was searching for post by a member today, and I noticed that the search only returns 500 hits, is there is a reason for this? Is it something that I can personally change in my settings?

It's too bad that it nails the server, unlimited searching would be ever so nice. A bit impractical I suppose though. I guess the magic search isn't so magical. I'm just happy we have a search.

Yes chels, - I have quite a few more than 500 posts on these forums already (and more than 1000 pm's!) and it does stop it at 500.
This is actually more of a concern than the post searching
I will look into it, if I can improve the efficiency we might be able to up it, though I am not sure it could be unlimited. Imagine you have to look through every word of 1.7 million posts (as there are on v2)! Then image multiple people were doing it or something similar at once. Poor servers don't stand a chance!
I was trying to figure out how many posts I had made on V3 specifically (out of random curiosity) and I figured that searching for all post made by me would get me the anwser, until I ran into the 500 hit cap. It's really not a big deal, I just wanted to make sure it was supposed to happen.

Could you make normal searches smaller and then the "find all posts by..." bigger? Would that work? Or not at all?
Or have a thing to specify it? So that you'd only have it going up to a gazillion million billion if you wanted it to - I can imagine most "find all posts by..." you'd only want like, 250, tops.
Yeah, is that a possibility? Adding a little box with something like "return the last...." and then you can have 100, 250, 500, 1000 etc ??? And have the default set to 250 or 500 so that general searches won't drain the server too much, but there is still the option to search bigger sometimes.

What Chels and AD were describing sounds wonderful, if it's possible. V2 search works for me, as long as there's only letters in the search. Or it seems so anyways. Yes, we don't want this search to explode either. :)

That would be a disaster if the search here stopped working. V2 search works for me some times if I beg and plead.

Chels, take a look at that forum you can't post the link of and see what that is set to. Also anyone feel free to look at forums they visit, and let me know what they do. Obviously don't pick teeny weeny forums because they are easy - take a look at large forums
The majority that I can find, on various subjects (taken of big-boards.com, which lists all the largest forums in the world) are set to 300, not even 500
