RE: what are you wearing threads?

I saw the other day that a thread where someone asked people to post pictures of them dressed up (think it was called "favourite outfits" or something) was closed for no apparent reason other than it could potentially be triggering. Now i know that there has been loads of discussion about this issue in the past but i was just wondering why then people are allowed to post threads with pictures of car crashes?

I mean, i'm not bothered necessarily either way, I'm not triggered personally by either of these kinds of threads but it does seem a bit weird that if we are trying to "protect" people so much from being triggered by seeing other peoples bodies (even though the emphasis is essentially on the clothes they are wearing - yes, i know that people sometimes post negative comments about themselves and yes, this is boring) why posts of mangled cars are being allowed?

Maybe I am missing the point, maybe noone finds these things triggering, but the pictures of cars, i feel, are a lot more upsetting than seeing someone thinner than me wearing clothes I probably couldn't pull off. Essentially the "what are you wearing?" threads are for people to post images of themselves in outfits which they feel positive about. And essentially the car crash threads are a glorification of a horrible accident.
I don't mean to say that people are posting these pictures because they want us all to see how much damage they have done to the car but it does seem a bit strange that people are allowed to post things like "if i had hit 10mph faster i would be dead" or whatever and yet people aren' allowed to post pictures of their favourite outfits, which in theory, is a much more positive thread.

i dunno. just a thought. you guys know i don't enjoy moaning or criticising.

I roll over and hold on tightly, and whisper "If they want you, they're gonna have to fight me,"

yeh, there's even a thread about being dressed up. which is all about clothes - therefore loads of full length pictures.

how is that okay.

We did have a thread a while ago discussing the possibility of bringing a thread like what are you wearing back and after much debate i locked it and the moderators are deciding what to do next about it to be honest.

As for the dressing up thread we thought that it was ok to stay because of the fact that because it was more formal wear the same people wouldnt be posting every day and therefore it was less likely to be triggering. I'm not explaining myself very well but yeah that was the general idea anyway.

But the thread for people wearing formal clothes is still full length photos of people which could cause all the issues re: thinness etc discussed in the other thread just the same, surely.
I was perplexed when I saw one clothes thread closed (can't remember the name of it) yet the formal wear one left open. How often or not an individiual
posts in the thread seems neither here nor there to me.
Five different people could post thinspiration shots on five consecutive days.

Stop thinking about what I want, what he wants, what your parents want. What do you want?

I totally agree with you re the car etc pictures. For various reasons, it would be upsetting for me to see such pictures. I don't click on the threads. But. Having them there feels... wrong.

yeah, this was more about the inconsistency of what is and isn't allowed to be posted than about trying to get the "what are you wearing thread" back.

There is an inconsistency IMO. Im getting fed up of people getting in trouble for saying something that had no nasty intent behind its wording/posts, yet other members getting away with murder. But yeah. Pointless post.

Sarah: Give me the child.
Jareth: Sarah beware. I have been generous up till now. I can be cruel.
Sarah: Generous? What have you done that's generous?
Jareth: Everything! Everything you have wanted I have done. You asked the child be taken, I took him. You cowered before me, I was frightening. I have reordered time. I have turned the world upside down, and I have done it all for you! I am exhausted from living up to your expectations of me. Isn't that generous?

There's an inconstancy everywhere.
Throughout the site.
& I thin thats one of the things that needs to be combatted the most to 'improve'

It's a shame you can't 'like' threads, like you can on facebook. I would be so down with liking this.

Things os though, then everybody would just 'like' it instead of offering their opinion :)

exactly. the inconsistency is my biggest problem with it too.
either allow a what are you wearing thread or ban all clothes threads allowing full body photos. to me, that seems like the only solution.
it's no good saying "but people complained at x thread" because they aren't complaining about the thread in particular but the content within and if there is another thread on the same forum with pretty much the same content the complaints are still valid across the whole picture forum.

take what you love

The problem I see is that we have a group here of very very (and I mean this respectfully) sensitive people who are suceptable to many varying triggers.

It's not possible to protect everyone all the time form everything. Hence either the picture thread goes completely, or we have a 'take responsibility' clause. A middle ground is not possible in my opinion.

Imperfection is underrated.

It's all very well seeing pictures of people, people are everywhere and can't be avoided, but glorifying the effects of accidents and danger is another thing entirely. In my book. Yes, I'm sensitive, always have been and always will be, and there's a personal reason why such pictures are upsetting to me. But.

What I want to know is if so many people had a problem with the car crash thread then why have we not recieved one PR about it? (I know Lucy, this is not the intention of your thread and I'll address that with my opinion in a sec) but if the people who are posting saying they cant believe we kept a thread about car crashes actually bothered to PR it, then chances are it wouldnt be there by now.We work a lot of the basis of public opinion and a lot of the time we wont close threads unless the feeling of the members is that they dont want the thread there. I had seen the car crash thread and was amazed that no one at all has PRd it, but people would PR a thread with a full body shot! Im sick of people using the excuse that they cant be bothered to PR too....if you cant be bothered to PR, then dont complain about it.

Basically I think we were trying to give some sort of leeway with the formal wear thread, because we hadnt recieved many PRs saying it was triggering in comparison to when WAYWT was around. Yeah its inconsistent of us, but I think we were trying to find some sort of middle ground with it, if its not working and people dont like it, well thats good to know....feedback is good :)

In regards to us 'letting some members get away with murder' and penalising others.....well...I have to say Im kind of sick Im saying this, but PM us, email us etc, we want to know. PM me...I dont mind, even if I cant do anything about the situation I dont mind listening to a vent. But genuinely, were not here to victimise people and we can only help with the info were given. There are some people who will come under the mod radar time and time again, but were not sitting here waiting for certain people to break the rules, a lot of time it wont even be a mod who spots the rule break, so yeah....if you think someone is getting away with stuff, PM us or email us.

RYL is inconsistent and its one of those things we already work on behind the scenes. We dont always want to be an 'all or nothing' site....we do want to give some sort of freedom, I think if we continue to lock down all threads of the same nature and not give some sort of leeway, then itll just end up as an even more restricted site and we get enough complaints about that as it is :P

But thank you, for the feedback....I think sometimes we become unaware of the feeling surrounding certain issues, so its good to hear something like this....thanks for posting some constructive criticism!x

There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.
