Triggering (SI/ED) - Can family section you if your over 18?

I was just wondering if family or friends have you sectioned against your will when your over 18?

Ive been sectioned 4 times and I recently discharged myself but since gettting home I'm slowly going down hill again, especially with my ED. My mum and dad are seperated and both of them say that if I dont improve I WILL be going back in but surely they cant make me if I really don't want to?
I'm not suicidal but I keep dissasotiating for hours on end, not talking for up to 6 hours at a time, other times I'm screaming and shouting at my boyfriend for no reason, basically losing all control, making myself sick numberous times a day, that sorta thing.

Basically I was moved to the ED ward after 6 weeks in an acute ward as my BMI is getting lower and physically my health is deteriorting too but they had me bed bound and on constant observation, where I wasnt even aloud to cross my legs or use my phone after meal times, silly wee things like that, that pissed me right off...
Now my family are threating that they will put me back in even if I dont want to but surely they can't if I'm over 18!!?

You parents wouldn't be able to get you sectioned that would be up to the 'professionals'. Your parents may contact your Dr with concern and suggest an admission with or without your consent but at the end of the day that is up to the Dr's and team.
And if that becomes the case surely it would be best to be in voluntarily?

i'm tired of chasing my dreams.
i'm just gonna ask where they're going,
and hook up with them later.

I always thought they could, but I just read this

Quote:
It is also now no longer possible to admit a competent and objecting 16 or 17yr old to hospital for treatment for mental disorder on the say of their parents.
So I'm not sure now. I think at the very least your parents could ring your doctor and ask them to assess you for a section.

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…

I've asked about this as my mum threatened to have me sectioned, she can with the agreement of 2 medical professionals. If that were to happen, it would be better to go voluntarily as it will be on your record and a voluntary admission looks better than a sectioning :/

I hope everything is alright for you

Hi thanx for the replies.
I understand that voluntry is much much better as I have experienced the nasty detention forms but honestly that is a place I am honestly not ever ever wanting to be put in again and if I can I'll do anything anything at all to prevent it.

See I tried to tell my parernts that there was nothing they could do because in the hospital they tell you that your an adult bla bla bla, so even though you are under the care of a parent and over the age of 18, I dont think there is much family can do, I honestly hope they can't because I couldnt stand the thought of ever going in again espes to the ED unit.
The last time I was admitted I didnt want to go but my mum forced (not physically) me to go to the out of hours dr's and only because I reluctantly agreed I was put in but say I wasnt as cooperative if there was ever a next time, the worst I could get would be a shoutin at and not forms?

I was sectioned once against my will and worse than that I signed myself in the second time and my bloody sister came along and signed over me so i couldnt leave.
Im well over 18 but i live in ireland.Cant say i ever got over it

It became like a sort of prison. Encased in a silver shell, words so full of bleeding need spilled like drops on dry leaves. And all the while laughter prevailed a long way from here. Nowhere land, nowhere time, nowhere space.

See everytime Ive been sectioned was when I was either trying to leave or eventually the restraints where happening to often that they had to section me even though I wasnt going to leave anyway.
I'm also in the North so I dont know if they differ much.
I'm sorry for whats happened to you it seems like that was a lot for you to handle.

I dont think your parents can section you they would have to get perfessional like two doctors and a social worker to come to your house and assess you (which the crisis/home treatment team can do) or another thing my parents did was carry me screaming to the car and then drive me to a&e where i was assessed by the on duty psych.

so they cant actually phsyically section you and force you into a psych ward but they can do stuff to make it easier for the perfessionals.

i hope you dont have to go back there, maybe if you think its going to happen you could ask to just go to the actue unit instead of the ed ward if you find that less scary and restrictive?

Your parents can not directly section you. They can refer you to the professionals, and as said above, two professionals would have to be in agreement for you to be sectioned.

Your parents can encourage the process along, but without the professionals agreeing, they can not do much more than take you to a&e, appointments, or have the Psychs meet at your home for an assesment.

*hugs*
Hope things settle down a little bit for you soon.
