Meds and menstrual periods

I'm on Olanzapine 20mg and its stopped my periods, which has given me great joy as I hate periods and they serve no purpose for me.

I just wanted to know if anyone else has noticed their periods stop or get irregular on psych meds? I would like to know how common this is.

PM me if you want a PDF copy of the ICD-10 or the Mental Health Act 1983/2007. I ALSO HAVE THE DSM-V BOOK and am a pharmacology student.

I have a visual impairment / neurological problems so I need people to type in clear text and no funny fonts. Also excuse any typos, my vision blocks things out.
I have autism and have problems communicating, PMs included.
Just becasue I type well doesn't mean I speak well. I am only part time verbal.

I have ad irregular periods for about 4 years and had my first one in 2 years the other day which lasted for a month :S So I'm interested to know if the meds triggered one in me or what?

But yeah I know what you mean - great job lol.

Not on meds of any kind, but I'd get freaked if I didn't have periods any more! I find them reassuring; I'm not pregnant, drastically underweight or having any other problems.

It's just your body cleaning itself out XD But I know they can be annoying. I'm on the contraceptive pill, which makes them lighter, 100% regular and you can choose to have them once a month, or once every 2/3 months. For anyone who has and hates their period.

Well I have to agree to disagree. Periods are evil and, for me personally, pointless and just plain irritating.

Neo, my best wishes to you and your future child.

Steel, just be careful. When meds stop your periods it can be a sign of a hormone imbalance which can lead to problems, and olanzapine is known for raising prolactin, this can lead to infertility if not treated, I know you might not be bothered now but you might regret it if you're older and in a relationship. When I was on haloperidol my periods stopped and a doctor told me I wasn't producing enough estrogen (sp?) which can cause damage to your bones. When I take my meds my psych always asks me if my periods are regular.

I'm on risperidone - been on it four about 4/5 years was on 6mg now on 4mg.

I have had only about 6 periods in that time.

I haven't had a period since last May.

I had my prolactin checked a couple of times and it is high, but I think the docs are only concerned if I were to get breast milk, which can happen apparently.

As it is I think the docs are just relieved to find a med combination which keeps me relatively well.

I might add: no one told me it could affect my future fertility

Bear, thank you, I will be careful.

Although it has been said before that if I have a child, social services may take it away from me due to my history.

Tash, you're welcome =]

Agedharmer, thank you for your advice.

Even though you hate having periods it would be a good idea to see a doctor about the fact that they've stopped even if it is meds related. For the good of your general health and piece of mind.
I've been on meds before that have set askew my menstrual cycle. Always found it disconcerting.

Stop thinking about what I want, what he wants, what your parents want. What do you want?

Bex, I'm sorry that it doesn't work as well as it could. Have you considered other medications?

I Heart And, I would pay to not have periods, that's how much I hate them.

I have PCOS & have irregular periods roughly every 3/4 months, but it sound heaven to have none at all, I really hate them & also believe they serve no purpose for me, I think if mine stopped completely I'd jump up & down in excitement, wish my meds would stop mine no luck so far.

I'm not on phyc medication or anything however I do get irregular periods due to when I was "anorexic" and had an eating disorder. I so get a really sore stomach though, quite a lot. So the only thing I'm missing is the actual blood :S

Yeah, when my friend was anorexic, her periods stopped for ages.
Stumpy, I agree, periods are such a stupid evolutionary mistake.
