Anti psychotic Meds

I was wondering what these meds do? My cpn has suggested them to me, given 'stuff' is getting worse (cpn has had phone calls about me and my problems - people saying they are really concerned and something needs to be done) but I'm confused by how they work.

I also have a lot of physical health problems and am concerned they will effect them (cmht don't believe my physical problems are physical though - they insist they are delusions, even though I have x-rays/specialist reports to prove otherwise - my conditions are rare and previously were considered to be psychological in origin).

I'd appreciate any advice.

I am on anti-psychotics. They can have many purposes - helping with delusions, psychosis etc but also off label uses such as mood stabilisers though some are licensed for both I believe.

Do you have a Doctor you trust whom you could speak to about the physical health problems and how the medications may affect them or a pharmacist may be able to help you?

Sorry I don't know exactly how they work but think there are two main types. The 'old' anti-psychotics and the newer ones, they work in different ways. I hope someone can help with this.

Thank u for replying!

I know they are for the 'hullucinations', well what they say are anyway. I don't trust cmht. At all. But my gp might know, do you think she would?

Yeah, your GP will know. Also, if your cpn doesn't believe you about your physical conditions, get him (?) to contact your GP and discuss it with her.

Just to clarify here - my cpn does believe me.

It's the drs who don't. And my gp has spoken to various people multiple times - when I was admitted I was refused my pain relief because it wasn't 'real' pain and my gp was really angry that I was made to beg. The problem is whilst the nurses know and believe me the drs don't and they won't listen to the nurses, nor to my gp. It's a bit difficult!

I am on APs, 2 at the moment as I am switching from 1 to another. 1 of them is a typical AP and the other is an older style typical AP. You can pm me if you want.

Sorry if i'm rehashing stuff but yeah

Anti-p meds have many functions. Firstly, one of the main uses of anti-p meds is for the treatment of people having hallucinations and delusions - ie treatment for the diagnosis of schizophrenia / psychosis.

Secondly, specific anti-p meds can be used as a mood-stabliser compared to the standard mood stabliers like lithium, carbamapzine (spelling). Apparently a low dose of it anti-p meds help with stablising a person's mood along side the standard anti-d meds.

Thirdly, some anti-p meds, as a side effect has a sedative effect, which of course helps ppl sleep better. However, i know in Aus, under the MIMS (the bible of medications) they don't class the use of specific anti-p meds as a sleeping med, only mainly for the treatment of schizophrenia and ? the treatment of a person with bipolar.

Lastly, some anti-p meds, mainly the older types are used in hospital for quickly sedating a person and keeping them safe while in hospital when they muck up during that time.

Just quickly, there are 2 main types of anti-p meds. The standard ones are the older ones, while the atypical ones, are the newer type anti-p meds.

But back to the situation, that's pretty damn poor by the doctors to not allow u any pain meds, despite u and the GP mentioning to them u have them. However, the docs might agree that, u having pain meds might interfere with ur other meds (doubtful but u never know). But yeah, maybe complain to somebody, the NUM (Nurse unit manager) or somebody higher about it, coz definitely, not right by the psych docs to do that when ur in pain.

Anti-psychotics are prescribed for hallucinations, auditory and visual. As well as delusional behaviour.
In lamens terms they slow your brain down and dull the activity of it in order to prevent the over-activity causing the hallucinations etc. I think it's worth you trying them out, if you find they don't agree with you then you can always stop them but there's also the chance that they could make your quality of life a lot better.

Stop thinking about what I want, what he wants, what your parents want. What do you want?

The actual job of anti ps is especially for schziophrenics is to curb the amount of dopamine being produced or stop the receptors in the brain receiving domapine.I know this is most likely with szchios but also with psychosis .This is the chemical reason for anti psychotics .This is why they are prescribed .Look it up on google ,it will tell you all about each med.

It became like a sort of prison. Encased in a silver shell, words so full of bleeding need spilled like drops on dry leaves. And all the while laughter prevailed a long way from here. Nowhere land, nowhere time, nowhere space.

They have said what I am having are hullucinations and the purpose would be to 'remove some of the terror' so your replies do make sense.

Slowing down of the brain would be a problem for me as I have a degenerative neurological condition.

Haven't seen gp yet but will.

The pain med thing was because they were, and still are, insisting my pain is a delusion thus pain meds are unnecessary. They aren't very good with physical conditions at all. They have been known to refuse patients pain meds to try and force other drs to do something, in my case nothing can be done so that wasn't why.
