different dyes have different ingredients. have you tried semi permanent - ones like special effects are vegetable dyes rather than chemicals so can be better for allergy sufferers.

eff...i had some allergic reactions to hair dye in the past, but as mandimoo says, there are semi permanent vegetable dyes that might be okay. i'll let you know how the "manic panic" dye goes this week...

Which dye were you allergic to?
Also, if you have ever used henna on your hair then it can increase the chances of being allergic.
Oh and if your doing something drastic like going to white blonde or a huge change in colour then dye burns like hell regardless of allergies.

special effects reccomend beeunique as a seller. its also available in some 'alternative' shops, but i'm guessing online you'd get a better range of colours. also can be bought on ebay,

thanks for the links!

not too painful aimee, just stingy/burny and then itchy/rashy/peely. nothing life threatening. i am quite an allergic person anyway so wasn't that surprised.

it was a schwarzkopf one, never used henna (you have to leave it in for soooooooooooo long, i'm not patient enough for that).

I have had problems with scwarzkopf too so I stick to natural dyes now and they haven't caused any problems.

if its a skin allergy, you could always try a strand test at hairdressers where they dye all buy your roots so leaving your scalp dye-free.

Food colouring never lasted for me when I was about 12 and trying to dye my hair with it... besides. Blonde is extreeeeeemely overrated.

you can get manic panic bleach kits that will lighten your hair at home so you can put a rad colour in it.

i don't work for manic panic!

just had a great success with my dye last night...it's bright and shiny and GREEN!

depending on how long your hair is/how much dye you will need, you could do it at home for about $40...i have really short hair, so i have heaps of dye left for when it fades.

even though it won't help with my trich, i do feel really good to have done something silly, and not been so precious about my stupid hair.

I'm glad someone has something good to say about manic panic... I've just got some because the blue directions I used came out soo quickly, so was wondering if a different brand might work better.

when matt and i punked up for a holiday to holland, i used special effects pink and matt used manic panic blue coz they had the colour he wanted. matt's blue turned green by the end of the fortnight but we had our 'normal' colours awaiting us for when we came home.

Its turquoise because I want it sort of vaugely greeny anyway? It can't be as bas as directions, it half left after the first wash which sucked. Yet the violet Directions is still pretty strong. Might be a brand/ingredient/something type thing.
