Well putting a hole in a muscle is bound to hurt. Most people struggle to eat for the first week. Perhaps try some ice cream as the cold might help numb it and take any swelling out. Also sucking ice chips will do the same.
Maybe try taking some painkillers in tablet form? And make sure you keep up your fluids. you can use a straw which might help.

Ice cream and soup got me through my tongue peircing pain.
I really liked it then my tooth chipped and my mum told me to take it out so the 'dentist doesn't see it' I did and it closed up.

I couldn't go through the pain of getting it done again. but yeah ice cream and soup. Also don't smoke, if you do make sure you rinse your mouth out with water and clean your teeth.

Life can be beautiful if you let it.
Step back, breathe and take it in

You do need to take in food and so something like icecream would be fine and just look after it as your piercer said. The reason why the one you have in now is so big is in case of the swelling so it is allowed to swell and the bar doesn't potentially get stuck inside it which would cause further problems. Only once it's healed can you then change the bar and the piercer should have given you information on the aftercare and on ther it should've given a rough time of when it should be healed.

You do need to take something in. Ibuprofen, so long as you have no other problems that are against it's use can take down the swelling HOWEVER, this may not be appropriate as you HAVE to eat with that to make sure your stomach wall is coated and protected. Ice cubes will also be a good thing to suck on and they will help reduce the swelling. Paracetamol can also help with the pain and given that it may be difficult for you to eat, in terms of the pain that may be your best option right now but that won't really take down the swelling. Again, only take it if there is no reason in the leaflet to suggest you can and take it as described in that.

But yep, you definately have to take in some nutrients and also drink. Cold drinks would soothe it better than hot and to take in food soft things would be beter than hard/ chewy things which means your tongue has to work harder so things like soup as others have said would be a good idea.

Also, at the moment, however tempting it is, DO NOT play with it. It's best never to really because as the above user says, it can cause tooth breakage easily. But yeah, at the moment it will cause the swelling to increase and healing to take much longer.

If you find the swelling increases and your tongue starts to get really big and it's reducing the amount you can breathe (which is very unlikely o happen but is always a risk with tongue piercings) then go straight to A&E/ the ER.

Also, unless you have to don't remove the bar until it has fully healed in case it does get infected. Also, it is a good idea that the first time it gets changed you get a piercer to do it. This is extremely important if you're not totally sure about what you're doing.

Chances are the piercer told you to go and get an ice lolly and mouthwash straight away.
I also doubt that it was a spare of the moment decision to get it done, did you not look it up online at all? Yes, it will hurt, it's your tongue.
Eat ice cream, soup, things that you dont need to chew.

When I got my tongue done I had the same but it started the day after, for some reason my body took a day to catch up with the pain, probably adrenalin!! I found that when it was really aching that holding very warm (not boiling!) water in my mouth until it cooled down then refreshing it really really helped, for some reason hot stuff helped me more than cold. But take the FA's advice over mine obviously But if it isn't going to do anything negative, it's worth a try maybe?

But be careful with what mouthwash you use - I got told not to use alcoholic ones by my piercer. This might be wrong though! I used VERY VERY diluted tea tree oil as a mouth wash and that seemed to help so that might be worth a try?

I agree, you can use mouthwashes which are gonna be really helpful but stay away from alcohol ones. Dentyl pH is one I know for a fact is alcohol free but there are many others out there.

wquus, it would be the swelling rather than adrenaline that meant yours was more painful the next day. It takes a while for that to properly increase and when it does that puts pressure on your nerves.

It were a split decision so i didnt look it up or anythign before hand, i didnt know i HAD to, my decision, so i just did it,
anyway, other than that......

well, thamk you everyone for everyone help, its heeling, its a slow process, yeah it seems to be loking okay, just having a annopying time with my tongue color, im a right mouth freak and brushed my teeth three times a day, and now its becoming yellow, and no matter how much i gently brush it, it just isnt getting any better lol, i have eaten a lot of icecream and soup, couldnt stand an ice cube because of how much it would hurt, its still a bit achy and stingy at times, but im getting there, my piercer gave me a sheet that said listerine anti bacterial, thing is its got alcohol in it, ive been using it anyway as it was on the aftercare list, i dont know ive been told different things:/
Thank you though, thank you very much :)

The yellow-ness, is that on your tongue? The thing I'm thinking is now, because of using the antibacterials several times a day you may have reduced the bacteria that normally lives in your mouth and allowed yeast to grow forming oral thrush.

I really WOULD suggest an mouthwash wishout alcohol as that will irritate it less and allow it to heal faster but whatever you are going to do it will take weeks to heal; think about it, you've had a metal bar stuck through your tongue; pretty traumatic so your body won't like it, will get inflammed and stuff and it takes time for your body to heal so that the edges of your tongue around the piercing heal together leaving just a hole there but it's not something that just takes a few days and really it can take 3 weeks or longer for it to heal adequately so eating is normal once more and that's presuming you're not messing with it. Really if you are worried about it it would be a good idea to go back to the piercer. Though, these should've explained to you what to expect.

If it is your tongue that is a yellowy/ white colour, like a layer on top which is red and raw if scraped away. This is more common if you have a new piercing as many of the antibacterials significantly alter the pH (how acidic/ alkaline the area is) and that increases the risk of oral thrush as well as them killing off some of the bacteria that should prevent you from this, if you're immunosuppressed or if you're taking a lot of antibiotics. This can also be worsened by smoking. If you feel this is the case I'd go to a pharmacist and buy some of their over the counter thrush treatments such as fluconazole or itraconazole, telling them it's for oral thrush and if you're not sure that's the case the show the pharmacist (there's usually a booth here you can talk to them alone) and they can see what they think.

Also, though sucking on ice will hurt at first it will then calm it down a LOT and take down the swelling and you do need to get as much nutrition into you as possible and so different kinds of soups would be the best way forward and it needs to be several times a day really as well as icecream which will help soothe it further and will give you other things but as it settles down you need to get back into eating normal things. Having porridge and anything soft but not shewy is a good idea too rather than just eating soup which will not be the way to having a balanced nutrition; important for helping it to heal.

Also, can just remind people that this is not the place to make judgement on whether someone should or shouldn't have looked up info beforehand. Yes in an ideal world we would but people do do things on the spur of the moment/ without thinking and even if they are planning it for ages not everyone looks it up (and if they go to a decent piercers there should be no need for this as they should explain everything before you give your final consent to having it done). So can people please not make comments on here about her no looking it up; I'm sure everyone is guilty of that before and there's no point saying that after the problem has occurred, it won't help her now.

Don't use mouthwash - thats what they told me when I had mine done (both times) - I'm not sure why but apparently its not a good idea. Strong saline rinse in the morning and in the evening, as well as after you eat, and they also said to avoid dairy and yeast in the first week because they cause infections. I did this and mine was fine and healed really quickly (I had to have it done the second time because it healed up)
also - no plastic for 6 weeks.
:)
