Lighter Life.

Has anyone ever tried this?
It's a weight loss programme you go on where all your meals are sent to you.
A friend of mine has just started and I just wondered if anyone else has gone on it.
What were your experiences or thoughts about it?

I believe Aimee tried something along the same lines, but an Aussie version.

I personally don't think that they're any good long term. YES, they take control away from you and structure your meals very well, but what happens when you have to start cooking for yourself and controlling your own intake again? I don't think it's sustainable, and it's very expensive. Really, a strict meal plan and extra support is the best way to go about it.

Just my 2p.

I've never tried anything like that, but I would tend to agree with the above. A diet plan where you were making your food would probably be better in the long term because you would be changing your lifestyle to a more healthy one and you would get more used to making healthy choices.

Heya Fi,

I did something similar - I had to pick the meals up myself, but yes, every meal was made for me. And here's my two cents on the matter:

The Pros:
- I lose weight and regained an idea of what a good "portion" size was.
- I got support though weekly meetings (you may not get this if it is sent to you, though)
- It was good food & easy to eat

The cons;
- It's strict, and finishing it creates great anxiety about creating your own meals (I started restriction, which it turn, lead to massive binges)
- It's expensive
- At the end of the day, you still have to learn to create your own meal plans and create your own meals.

Albeit, by the end of my journey with them I would have done anything for a good, fresh ham sandwich! And now, I am better with portion control.

So when all is said & done, I think Amy & Kayl above have some pretty good points. I wouldn't say don't do it, because I did it and it helped shift my weight and get me into an exercise routine too, but there's a lot to consider about what happens when you end the program, which may be what you're struggling with now.

Is this one of those plans where you get every meal, or can you choose to only do like dinners and stuff?

And furthermore, what do you think you would benefit from it?

xxxxx

Thanks for the replies folks, especially Aimee, it's not me doing it though, it's a friend of mine. I was just curious because I've heard a lot of differing opinions on it and was just looking for some first hand opinions of it. She recently opened up to me about some major eating problems she's had which are quite similar to what we're all dealing with here.
It's for 4 months and she does go to a weekly meeting, it's only been a couple of weeks.
Basically, I want to help her as much as I can, if you were struggling on it what sort of things would you find supportive? She's obviously going to struggle at some point and I'm unsure whether she'll actually complete it.

I dunno I guess I was just a bit shocked about it, kind of came out of nowhere and I'd like to know what it's going to be like.

Mm, if she's struggling on it.... just reminder her she's doing really well, yknow? Making positive steps. Sometimes it can feel like you're putting asll this work into and it nothing happens, remind her that if she is simply looking after herself she already is doing good.

Sorry, I've got to run, but I'll have a think xxx

IMO its very very strict and low cal and someone i know did it, lost loads of weight BUT i suspect it has led him down a bad path of restriction and food obsession, but then im not a great person to discuss such things!

Yeah you're basically eating baby food for 4 months apart from a few cerealish bars you get.

That sounds terrible.

Is it really a VLCD? Because if so I'd straight out be very wary of this!

I've known a few people do this and they have had really good results from it. When I watched her doing this though (one of them I used to work with at the nursing home) she didn't have a lot of energy and made her quite snappy at times. Luckily you do have a lot of support through councelling. I remember her having to have a few consultations before she began it to make sure she was doing it for the right reasons and stuff.

I tried lighter life.....twice! And each time after I stopped I gained ALL the weight back super quick and loads of extra too :(
I had to stop because it just got too expensive (£77 a week!) and trying to drink 4 litres of water a day was a nightmare,I stopped going out for fear of wetting myself out in public!
While doing lighter life I had no energy at all and was just grumpy all the time. I mean losing the weight so quickly was fabulous but it was just a 'quick fix' and Im proof that stupid things like that dont work. In fact they have screwed my weight up even more.

I am now eating healthy 'normal' food, going to the gym and swimming and Im losing weight and its staying off. Yeah its coming off really slowly but I know Im getting healthy as I go along :) Id never consider doing lighterlife ever again....not if you paid me!!

Thank you, that's really what I need to hear. :)

The Mole was bewitched, entranced, fascinated. By the side of the river he trotted as one trots, when very small, by the side of a man who holds one spell-bound by exciting stories; and when tired at last, he sat on the bank, while the river still chattered on to him, a babbling procession of the best stories in the world, sent from the heart of the earth to be told at last to the insatiable sea.
Wind in the Willows.
