Let Go From My Job.

I didn't say "fired" because I had a feeling this would happen. They basically can't afford to pay me because of departmental budget cuts. I work for a department at the University I went to. Another full time staff member was hired (I'm part time and not "classified"/in a union - it's complicated), and she's taking on a lot of the stuff I would have been doing. Even if they *could* pay me, I'd be surfing the internet all day/doing a whole lot of nothing.

I have mixed feelings on this; part of me is really down and sort of feels like a failure. Another is glad because I HATE this sh*thole and how I've been treated the past 2 years. I also feel hopeless that I'll never find a job related to my field here (fine arts.) I'm not ready to move....

My parents said they would help me out with rent, but I still feel like a f*ck up. I knew this was going to happen; I just wish they would have given me better notice. (They told me about it *today* and I am leaving next Wednesday.) I'm already looking for other jobs and looking into applying for a front desk position at the Women's Fitness Center up the block from my apartment.

I'm 24, and I feel like I should be further along. I just got my BFA in December of 2008, but my brother will be 27 at the end of the month and have a f*cking PhD...I'm lame.

Def. not lame.
I'm sorry this has happened, even if you knew it was coming, it still sucks.
I was thinking they should be entitled to give you more notice...but I guess not, as not part of the union, etc.
You say you are glad in a way to let it go. Maybe, as hard as it is, try to look forward to this as something good and new. To finding something new that you can actually enjoy doing.
Wow...that sounds really lame, doesnt it?
Good luck wishes for a new job, I hope you hear soon.
xx

I should have said that this is not my only job; I have 2 part time jobs, and this one pays much better and has/had more perks because I still had access to libraries and stuff at the university.

Anyways, yes, I am slightly glad to let this go, and part of me is trying to look at it as a fresh start....sort of (b/c I still have the other job I don't like.)

I worked for a professor part time last spring helping her with her artwork, and I may email her to see if she needs any help. Hell, she paid me better than either of my old jobs! My mom also made some job suggestions to me and said the same politics are going on at her work.

It's just frustrating. I know my degree is in a limited field, but I've had enough job/academic experience to prove I'm not a complete idiot.

Ugh.

Hi

I know how you feel about being let go, I was the same when it happened to me at my last job.

But I hated it and the management were awful. So long term I'm glad it happened. Look for the benefits in anything that goes wrong and let the bad side of it go.

You are better off, it will force you to look for something more suitable, and better paid, so go out there and find it!! x
