It's the whole 'personality disorder' bit I object to.
However, I tend more towards a preference of 'borderline', being as I'm rather of an psychoanalytic traditionalist, and do actually think the 'border of neurosis and psychosis' has a lot going for it.
I just don't like all the negative hype that goes with the diagnosis.
I might have more to say if I actually had the diagnosis, rather than relating to the symptoms.
When they originally did a vote thing on another site, before changing the name, I voted for the 'Emotional Dysregulation Disorder' option - as it's all about having trouble with regulating intense and difficult emotions. But it wasn't chosen.
Really though, the bottom line is that the symptoms/diagnostic criteria are really describing a particularly pervasive type of anxieties and depression.
Neither, as both contain the phrase "personality disorder'
How demeaning...to suggest your very personality is flawed as opposed to a difficulty in handling/accepting/controlling emotions.

This is exactly how I feel about it but have never been able to put it into words so eloquently.
I don't like either. There is nothing wrong with my personality I just need to develop better coping strategies.
I agree
I have "traits of bpd" .. and also "emotional dysregulation" so I shall give my 2 cents. I dont like either due to the PD part. But i dont really take my diagnosis seriously anyways.
I've been told I've borderline 'traits', as he's reluctant to diagnose me properly until a few years later. So I'll share my opinion too.
I personally prefer borderline. Simply because 'Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder' sounds like they're trying to be PC, and tbh it sounds a bit over-the-top and too fancy. And a bit daunting. 'Borderline' may imply things that some people mightn't want it to imply, but it's simpler, and does sufficiently describe what bpd's are going through.
I think they need to come up with a new term all together.
If I had to choose I'd go with bpd. I've always thought "emotionally unstable personality disorder" makes it sound less serious and would also probably end up stigmatized.
Borderline. Emotionally unstable makes it sound like emotions are the only part of the disorder rather than relationships, impulsives and such. Idk emotions sound to others as something easy to control..and it makes it sound like we are just dramatic because we choose to be rather than having an actual disorder
I wanna stay inside all day
I want the world to go away
i hate both, the personality disorder bit is the worst part, if i had to choose it would be borderline as i think people (like employers) might be more likely to do some research on borderline pd as most people have heard of it but dont know exactly what it is, before they totally disregard your application but with emotionally unstable i reckon they might assume they know what it is cus its more self explanatory...if that makes sense. also emotionally unstable is quite a negative phrase
