General Medical Question - Non Urgent - emotional after head injury?

hey,

yesterday i had a pretty nasty fall from a horse and my head took the force from hitting the fence (the fence skimmed my hat and hit underneath my hat). i had quite a bump appear and went off to hospital and was sent home after being checked over.

the problem is today i still have a slight headache and im really tired and ive been really tearful. I have had some bad news today too but even before i got the bad news i was feeling like this.

Obviously from the fall im aching and bruised and have been taking OTC painkillers but still feel horrible. Do you think that the feeling emotional is linked with the bang to the head or am i just being silly?

x

I suffered a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) from running into metal door frame and getting 8 stitches. I had serious emotional problems, mood changes, and physical consequences. I went to the hospital obviously and they didn't do a CT scan, everything was okay according to them. After almost 2 years I was finally diagnosed. I really think you should get a CT scan to check for physical problems and just to be sure. If you start getting worse such as mood swings, insomnia, memory issues, migraines, dizziness, fatigue, etc then see a doctor asap. Symptoms also depend on where you hit your head.

I'm not saying you will get a TBI from this but you just have to be careful. I thought I was fine, afterall I wasn't in a car accident but I just hit it in the wrong place and suffered unfortunately. Please be careful. If you have any questions ask me!

((I've sent you a PM))

A CT scan is not necessarily needed to detect a TBI. CT scans are not harmless, and asking for one before you have any idea if it is necessary or not is a bit much. There are a number of other factors in determining if advanced testing is needed aside from just hitting your head. Depending on several things, and the type of damage sustained from a TBI the damage may never show up on a scan.

I'm not sure what the doctors told you, but chances are you have a concussion. It is totally and completely normal to have a mild headache, be tired and be emotional while recovering from a concussion. A concussion is technically the non-medical term for what is medically classified as a "mild TBI". TBI is a very broad term. Most commonly you hear TBI when someone is referring to a severe injury, and concussion when someone is referring to a mild injury.

What you do need to look out for are your symptoms worsening or new symptoms showing up. Not being able to stay awake, a severe headache, vision changes, nausea/vomiting, fainting, or seizures are all examples of symptoms you want to look out for. If any of those do develop, go back to the hospital.

The other thing you need to look out for are your symptoms not going away. Even if they do, you should still have a follow up with your regular GP in a few days.

Also, avoid alcohol, ibuprofen and aspirin, which can all make bleeding worse.

Well it breaks my heart to see you this way,

And somebody told me you were doing okay,
Somehow I guess they were wrong.

It's good to have a follow up with your GP after any head injury, even if you are feeling better.
