Triggering (SI) - My english course work story
I'm not a very good writer and this is abit rushed as deadline was last term (i got extra time because my teacher lost my story so I have started again :) )
Kris stared blankly out the window which overlooked the playing fields. The class around her had fallen silent and the only sound she could hear was the steady ticking of the clock as the hands crawled slowly around the face. She looked down at the blank piece of paper on her desk, everyone around her was writing, some people had used more than one sheet of paper. A feeling of panic rose in her when she saw the time, she only had a few minutes left. Her breathing quickened and she reached into her pocket. Her arm tingled when her fingers touched the cold steel blade that lay at the bottom as if it was anticipating what was going to happen next.
The bell rang and the rest of the class handed in their papers and filed out of the class room. Kris stayed sat at her desk watching as the teacher, Miss Jenkins, tidied away chairs that hurrying students had left around the room. Kris’ eyes started to fill with tears.
“Kris, What’s wrong?” Miss Jenkins asked as she hurried over to her desk, “why haven’t you written anything?” She knelt down in front of Kris and looked straight into her face with her kind blue eyes.
“It’s nothing Miss, I just couldn’t concentrate, I’m really sorry.” Kris stuttered, her whole body was shaking. Miss Jenkins reached out and touched Kris’ hand.
“Don’t worry about it, can you do it for homework tonight?”
“Yeah, I’ll try I’m sorry.”
“Seriously, don’t worry, I know you haven’t been very happy recently.”
“Thanks Miss.” Kris leaned over and reached for her bag. As she stretched her arm the sleeve of her jacket lifted up and revealed her wrist which was crossed with neat cuts.
“Kris! What have you done?” Miss Jenkins stared at her wrist with a look of horror on her face. Kris quickly grabbed her bag and ran out of the classroom. “Kris, please wait!” Miss Jenkins called from the doorway.
Kris ran down the corridor and out into the car park where her mum’s car was waiting for her. She got in, trying to hide her fear and panic.
“What’s up with you?” Her mum asked with a scornful voice.
“Nothing I just got kept in late.”
The drive home was as silent and awkward as usual. She watched the trees and houses pass by, her mind tormented about what Miss Jenkins would say. Would she call her parents? Would she tell the other teachers? More panic rose in her and she longed for her blade. As soon as they got home she ran up to her room and locked the door. She slipped off her jacket and pulled the blade out from her pocket. She perched on the edge of the bed and ran the sharp side of the blade down her sore arm, leaving a deep slit. A feeling of anger mixed with adrenalin built up and she cut again and again. She felt light headed and sank to the floor, she sat in a daze and stared at her arm. Suddenly the phone started ringing downstairs and she heard her father answer it and call her name. She jumped up off the floor and quickly pulled her jacket on. The sound of her father’s heavy footfalls on the stairs made her heart flutter nervously, she heard them across the landing approaching her room. Suddenly he kicked open the door and threw the phone to her.
“It’s for you.” He grunted and slammed the door behind him.
Kris stared at the phone for a moment and then held it to her ear and spoke,
“hello?” her voice was wavering.
“Hey Kris it’s me!.” Answered a cheery voice. A wave of relief swept over her, it was her friend, Effie. After an awkward conversation about history course work which Kris hadn’t done Effie hung up the phone. Kris felt partly relived that she had gone but she also suddenly felt alone. Her mum called her name from down stairs, her dinner was ready. She looked down at the bloody sleeve of her jacket, she hid it at the bottom of her washing basket and put on a long sleeved top, then went downstairs to join her parents.
During dinner they sat in silence, her mum occasionally asked questions about her day at school and feigning interest in the answers. Kris felt like screaming at them, she knew they didn’t care about her and it annoyed her when they pretended to be. That night she struggled to sleep, pain shot through her wrist every time she lay on it. Eventually she drifted into an uncomfortable sleep filled with nightmares about what was going to happen tomorrow. She woke suddenly in the morning, her clock said 5 am. There was no point in going back to sleep so she got up and pulled on some jeans and a t-shirt. She took a black jacket of the back of her door and slipped the blade into the pocket. She checked her lesson timetable, Maths, History, English, PE and French. Her heart froze when she saw ‘PE’, she looked out of the window and the sun was shining, this meant she would have to wear her short sleeved t-shirt and wouldn’t be allowed a jacket. After packing her bag she crept downstairs and left for school.
It's no way near finished yet :)
ETA yeah my friends said it seemed abit 'heavy' and dark for english course work but my teacher expects stuff like this from me haha
