Democracy and the BNP

Tonight Nick Griffin, leader of the British National Party, is due to appear on the panel in Question Time (approx 1040, immediately after the 10 o'clock news).

There has been talk of the BBC banning his appearance because of the extremism of his views, which are distinctly racist. But I believe that in a democracy everyone should be allowed to express their views provided they are not inciting violence or racial hatred.

So I shall be deeply disappointed if he is not allowed to appear and to state his point of view. If his case is weak he should be slaughtered by the other panelists. I'm already offended by his statement earlier today about "Tory Generals" - General Dannart may have now signed up as an adviser to the Conservatives but for him to assume that Generals Mike Jackson and Charles Guthrie are Tory lackeys is presumptuous and outrageous. I rather suspect that he is going to dig himself into a hole he won't be able to climb out of ...

It should be a fascinating hour ...

Tony.

Never surrender.

As much as I may disagree with someone's else's personal views and opinions, nothing should take away their right to have and express them.

I agree with you, Tony, he should have the right to appear otherwise the BBC are completely contradicting themselves with their reasoning, he should be allowed his turn to speak, but in turn he should be prepared for what the panel are going to say. Freedom of speech shouldn't be taken from anyone, for if someone has a problem with what someone else is saying, they can express it too. We're supposed to be a civilised society, after all.

[sorry if this makes no sense, early hours and all that :)]

I agree Tony. As much as his views don't make sense, or how studiply outrageous they are, if we're to have a democracy, there should not be that 'some animals are more equal than others' thing.

I also agree. I mean, we can't jsut sweep the BNP under the carpet and pretend they don't exsist - they have two MEPs, they're a party, and unfortunaly they don't seem to be going anywhere. I think it would be good to have him on question time - if only to draw attenion to quit ehow racist/[insert word of your choice here] the party is, and hopefully put people who are borederlien off voting for them.

I think the comparison with the Nuremburg Generals was more outrageous! On an interview on the news he dismissed it as "a bit of black humour", but I think it shows what a vile man he is.

Hopefully Question Time will do more damage to the party as opposed to raising it's profile as hopefully people will see them exactly as they are, a bunch of repulsive, racist, bigots.

Surely most people who watch Question Time will already know about the BNP and know what sort of party they are?

Anyway, yes, I agree. They have every right to appear on the show.

I basically agree with what everyone has said above.
It actually makes me feel sick that where i'm from is one of the areas in Britain with the most BNP support.

But the BNP attracted a million votes in the last European election and now has two MEPs. So, however distasteful many of us may feel about the extremism of the party, there is clearly a proportion of the UK population who are unhappy about having a multi-cultural society imposed upon them without the electorate being asked, and now the latest population forecasts which predict a rise to 70 million within the next 20 years, most of them migrants.

Nick Griffin has arguably got plenty of ammunition to fight with tonight. It'll be very interesting to see what use he makes of it. I just hope that the whole debate isn't ruined by protesters drowning the discussion out - 'cos the whole subject definitely needs thrashing out from both sides in a democracy such as ours.

Tony.

PS. I'm not just watching it but recording it, since it just might be a classic.

Never surrender.

Oh god. Is this tonight? I hope everyone that watches it realises how idiotic this man is.

The BNP is not what this country needs. What this country needs is for everyone to realise that you are born in England through chance, and that does not give you an excuse to be a racist idiot.

I protested against the BNP, because tbh if they ever get in power they won't have to "ship" me out of the country for being a 3rd generation "Non British" person, I'll be sorting out a flight myself.

But I agree he has the right to appear and express his opinion....I just disagree so very strongly with his opinion

Yes, but because of the recession and Labour's unpopularity the BNP's support is rising.

I agree with the fact that they should be allowed to express their views. The panelists can express their views also.

This.

Everyone has a right to voice their opinion and debate and of course everyone else has to the right to agree or disagree.

The BNP don't worry me much. We have our own minds, we have morals AND we have other options in the election.
I would be far more worried if the BBC felt they had the right to decide who we were allowed to listen to...

Personally I say let the man speak we all have our own views and beliefs. Not all of them are going to be liked and accepted but really no one would like it if they weren't allowed to stand up for what they believe.

I think It will be quiet interesting to see.
Nick Griffin is more of an idiot than I am.
I hope the audience verbally give him what for.
We are all allowed our views and opinions and free speech is allowed but not when it's dangerous you know and his views could be dangerous.
