bank charge question

Ok, just a silly question i have about a bank charge i have.

i went £1 over my arranged overdraft in august. now halifax are charging me £28 because of that at the end of the month...

i was watching on some money programme (cant remember wht it was)
that banks are actualy not supposed to charge that much

is there any way around having to pay it back?
if i went to citizens advice would they just ridicule me because its just a petty ammount?

i get about £80 a week ESA now, and on the 28th of october halifax are going to take £28 off me, but also on that day i have tv licence, and contents insurance comming out of my account which will make me go over my arranged overdraft again, which is why i'm so bothered about paying the stupid £28.

hope thatmade sense, all replies appreciated : )

Bexx, you can ring up and ask them to to stop the charge.
Say you dont work and that money is all you have.

I'm pretty sure if you call them up you can sort something out.
If not I bet there is tons of "consumer rights" type info on the net that might be able to help...at least so you know what you are talking about when you call. xx

Try moneysavingexpert.com there's an assload of stuff about bank charges and getting money back etc. etc. I'm pretty sure there was something passed that banks are technically nto allowed to charge over £12 for stuff like that. But also, for a quid, I should imagine you can argue it.

if you have never had a charge before then they will almost always waiver the charge. If its not your first charge then really even thought its unfair they can charge what they want to.

Your best to talk to the bank so they can arrange for you to pay it back when you can.

that's not good enough, it is ILLEGAL for them to charge that much, just because you signed a contract agreeing to charges, doesn't mean they can legally charge that much, just as if someone warned you they were going to attack you, it wouldn't make it right or legal for them to then punch you.

you can get this money back.

here's a link, at the bottom there's a step by step process including template letters to download and send.

Yeah seriously, listen to Mand, it is not right for them to do that. And surely you want the money that belongs to you? Banks need to learn they can't just walk all over people and take money that is NOT rightfully theirs.
