I was just wondering whether anyone knew whether mirtazapine directly causes weight gain or whether it just increases appetite? My dose has been increased today but I'm really trying to lose weight at the moment. If it just increases appetite that's ok, I can deal with that but if not I'm not sure whether I want to increase or whether I should go back to my doctor and talk to her.
As far as I know, mirtazapine causes both increased appetite and direct weight gain (by its metabolic effects). I think if you are concerned, you should always go talk to your doctor.

Im sorry to say, I was on mirtazapine and it did increase my weight, yet not my appetite somuch. Mirtazapine did help me though and it can affect everyone differently.
I go back to the doctors and explain your concerns if it worries you
Take care xx
I've been on mirtazapine 4 years. No real weight gain here. It built me up to non-anorexic, and then I've been a steady just-on-healthy BMI since then.
I do walk everywhere though, and have a super-fast metabolism, always have had.
that med is the worst fat med out, i only have to look at the box an put on weight.seriously it is the worst for weight gain, when in hospital the brought a girl in , who had a breakdown , she was stick thin, the med work on her as she is ok, but she begged months later to come off ,as she was getting married an the weight she had put on depressed her, they changed it ,she is back to her normal weight now
It was horrendous for increasing my appetite when I was on it.
I don't agree with ^ though, Olanzapine was the worst for weight gain with me. I'm not sure about it's metabolic effects tbh.
Would weight gain still occur even if I wasn't eating much? I'm having a few problems with my eating at the moment. Trying to weigh up the benefits/costs of staying on mirtazapine. It did help for a while and if it's increased then it might help again but I really need/want to lose weight. This is my 4th anti-depressant so I don't know whether it's worth sticking to it as it did work for a while.
For some drugs like olanzapine, weight gain can occur even if you are not eating much. I am not sure about mirtazapine though, but considering they are structurally similar I assume that the weight gain associated with its use is not directly proportional to food intake. It's best to discuss it with your doctor.

this is a very good med. it effects everybody differently. why dont you give it a try and make you mind up from your own experience. dont be modifying your diet hun to cope with speculated weight gain from this med. if you hav been fine on it til now then you should still be ok.
Something has changed within me, something is not the same, I'm through with playing by the rules of someone elses game. Too late for second guessing, too late to go back to sleep, its time to trust my instincts, close my eyes and leap....
Somethings I cannot change, but till I try I'll never know...

Okay, facts are fine, but when it's something as important as this, it's not fine when it's an opinion.
I have read through several posts on RYL at the moment, and I understand that people are going to have their own opinions, but people often read through posts and will take the text as gospel.
There are youngsters on here that will read through posts and make choices and decisions based upon what other people think. There are people with Eating Disorders on here and that kind of comment is unhelpful. SOME meds you gain weight on, some have NO effect on your weight at all. I am currently on Citalopram, I have been on it for 2 and a half years and I am still underweight, and yes, I do suffer from Anorexia. However, one of the reasons I was scared of going onto it is due to the weight increase that COULD potentially happen. It didn't. There are a hec of a lot of meds out there that have no affect on a persons weight at all, and I think to say what you did is just pain wrong when it is completely false.
Sometimes people will be put onto meds for others reasons and they will, in a round about way, save their life. To use such a sweeping statement that encompasses so many different drugs isn't fair.
I shall also be making a post in Forum and Community to bring up the question of peoples' writing. This will not just be about you, so please do not think it is an attack on you. It will be a general topic that will involve many.

i said you never no till you try.do you think i like putting on weight . i dont/ i have to watch what i eat. i dont when im not on meds.its not forced to be the med, its can be what the med does, if your full of anxierty you are naturally slim . a med my carm you down so your matabilism alters, you dont burn so much/ so weight gain, .also if it makes you feel good about yourself an relaxed ,you may eat more,Anyone who is ill loss,es weight, get better you put some on,you may find your perfect weight,it says on the leaflets may cause weight changes.the one i take says may lose weight.im on a high dose fore my anxierty so my body changed when the anxierty slowed down, take me of the med and i will loose weight because the anxierty will be back.
