I've just finished watching the BBC programme entitled Wounded about two British soldiers very seriously injured in Afghanistan, and following their progress through rehabilitation in Birmingham and at Headley Court in Surrey.
I found it both moving and inspiring, particularly in terms of the way that neither of the soldiers featured complained in any way, despite the loss of both legs and an arm in one case and both legs and most of eyesight in the other.
Having once been a soldier myself I can understand the "blood-up" acts of gallantry which sometimes take place in war. But I'm tempted to think that coming to terms with the rest of your life as a cripple, as these two guys did (and they're by no means alone) requires a special sort of bravery. I admire them both enormously ...
I watched it, it scares me a lot that my boyfriend is about to enter into the army,Im glad he didnt watch it.
There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.
“Firemen are going to get killed. When they join the department they face that fact. When a man becomes a fireman his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished. What he does after that is all in the line of work. They were not thinking of getting killed when they went where death lurked. They went there to put the fire out, and got killed. Firefighters do not regard themselves as heroes because they do what the business requires.”
“The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding, go out to meet it.”
Man cannot discover new oceans until he has courage to lose sight of the shore.
Ah Headley Court is so close to me, I really do find it inspiring.
"Be nice. Think happy thoughts. Champion silver linings. Love all things (not just cute things like babies and kittens) & when you do love - love like they do in power ballads (you know like on a cliff with the wind in your hair and your eyes shut, knowing you'll never know love like this). Watch out for dog poo. Smile at people - even grumpy ones. Remember anything is possible & whatever you do always try to look on the bright side."
I watched part of it, I nearly cried when that dude walked and balanced on his own, bless him (: He coulda gave up, but he never did. Both of them didn't (:
When we lose twenty pounds... we may be losing the twenty best pounds we have! We may be losing the pounds that contain our genius, our humanity, our love and honesty. ~Woody Allen
