do you believe there is any strength behind your own thinking?
such as, if you believe you're going to get better from something, does that mean you will eventually (of course, providing you put the effort in)
i remember when i first met my current boyfriend, i saw him & spoke with him, & said one day i'd go out with him, i then found out at the time he had a girlfriend, so stayed away, but then when he split up with her, he asked me out & a year later we're still together.
i always said i'd go to uni, i'm in my second year.
there are bad things that i believed that have happened too, but lets not dwell on those.
so, do you believe if you believe it, it'll happen, or, is it all fate/destiny etc.
self belief is a very core thing to me.By self belief i dont just mean positive, but also negative. But yeah I think if you base what you do on your own thoughts/feelings rather than the need to please others (so say going to uni, you can do it because you believe you can or because other people tell you to) then youve got a lot more chance of succeeding.x
There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.
To a certain extent yes, if you want anything badly enough you'll get it. But no matter how much i believed i could fly I ain't going to be worrying any of the local bird populations.

Without a doubt one of the strongest sociological concepts around. Some say sociology is psuedo science, but self full-filling prophecy is so apparent in our everyday life; We tell Katie Price she's hard and cold, she acts such in interviews. You tell the class clown they're funny, they make more jokes. Someone ever told you they like you because of such and such and so you act up to that role?

Me: Mum what are you doing for ur 20th anniversary? Mum: BIG party time! .. Dunno what your dads doing.
I also think it's really powerful in fighting a mental illness - there's a lot of difference in saying "I'm going to recover" vs "I'm not going to recover." If you don't believe you are, any effort you put in is going to be met with a resistance that it's not going to benefit. Reminds me of learned helplessness.
I believe in this so strongly. I drove up to the hills one day and thought "I wouldn't mind this drive to get to work, it's so pretty" then walked into a beautiful store "I'd love to work here" and was offered a job there that day. And it's not my only example, it happens so often.
Law of attraction & self fulfilling prosthesis. Yes.
People have the power to change themselves, and by believing that things won't work or things can't change, things won't work and things won't change.
There's obviously a limit; you can't do anything super-human. But there is an awful, awful lot that you can do and can change by having a different mindset and assessing things differently.
I think we give too much power to material, action, stuff, things, doing.. all important.. but it starts with attitude and viewpoint and self belief. I think with self fulfilling prophecies it's not as irrational as it all seems at first.
The Mole was bewitched, entranced, fascinated. By the side of the river he trotted as one trots, when very small, by the side of a man who holds one spell-bound by exciting stories; and when tired at last, he sat on the bank, while the river still chattered on to him, a babbling procession of the best stories in the world, sent from the heart of the earth to be told at last to the insatiable sea.

There is actually a large body of research in this area which I have found quite interesting. I am cautious with the fate thing, I don't believe this but our minds have a large effect in life. In terms of success dependant on others, if we believe we can succeed then this will rub off on others. Also health isr a particular interest and the findings of positivity on physical health, some amazing results in the positive psychology field. Those individuals with HIV who were positive thinkers actually found a better CDT4 count, a lot of this is to with stress not impeding on health and also more active participation to increase health

We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars.
Absolutely. "Whether you believe you can, or you believe you can't... you're probably right".
Henry Ford I do believe? I have this quote up on the wall in the youth centre. It's brilliant.
I do think that yes if you believe in something it will come true. But you have to work at it. Like when you make a wish. You make the wish and then most people think that you just wait around for it to happen. But no. You make a wish and then you work your ass of to make it happen. If you beleive you can get better you will. Also, if you tell yoursefl often enough that you will get better, you will stsrt to belive it and you'll get better. People have willed themselves to death before. There were a few cases documented (stuffed if I can remember where >.<) about people who believed so strongly that they were dieing that they died. Medically nothing was wrong with them!
The power of the mind is an awesome thing!
"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
Oh I've heard of that too Jess. I think one was someone who got in the freezer compartment of a train and died of hypothermia, but the freezer wasn't switched on!
I also read a book which had 2 british kids and an aborigine kid in it, the aborigine kid thought he could see death in one of the other kids eyes and so died, I think it was based on a true story (though obviously the death bit might not be).
It's powerful, but scary stuff. I mean positive thinking is hard work sometimes!
its amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it... and its amazing how stuck in a rut you can become when you just dont have the energy to convince yourself any different.

This is me at the moment, I'm in a self fulfilling prophecy in a negative way because I don't have enough self esteem, social ability or confidence to believe and motivate myself to do what I want to do so I just don't. Or do I? But I've just convinced myself to the contrary.
It's hard to control the way you think though if you've got stuck in negative thought patterns and self beliefs for a long time.
So yes, I do believe that what you believe you think you can do, you will achieve.

I just dont like it when people think its some amazing outside source.
To quote someone from my church:
"I was sitting around all day doing nothing and I put on alot of weight. Then I found God and found out that He will only help me if I help myself. So I started exercising, and God took my weight off me!"

Certain ways of thinking put you in diferent moods. If you are constantly pessimistic and believe your life will never amount to anything, then it is likely you won't even try - why bother right?
Of course if you are optimistic, and believe you can do things, then you will try your hardest to make sure that happens, and so it can.
I don't think it's a definate thing, that if you believe or don't believe something it will always turn out that way, but I think it has a huge influence.
