Medication Question - Side effects of antidepressants.

I was just wondering what side effects people had discovered from different antidepressants. I know that different people will experience different things but any feedback would be good.

I was also wondering if like, because some medication is meant to 'even you out' so to speak, does that mean that on good days you won't be as happy or hyper?

I hope I'm making sense

It didn't matter in the end how old they had been, or that they were girls,
but only that we had loved them and that they hadn't heard us calling,
still do not hear us calling them from out of those rooms where they went to be alone for all time,
and where we will never find the pieces to put them back together.

There are many different anti-depressants and they can all have different side effects and so talking this through with your doctor if you're thinking about going on them is a good idea as it also depends if you have any other medical conditions or on any other medications which could affect the side effects.

Common side effects are dizziness/ drowsiness/ increase in suicidal or self harming thoughts when first starting/ nausea/ lack of concentration/ lethargy/ poss diarrhoea. Most of these however will reduce within the first 2 weeks- a month of you being on them. However you do not see the full effects mostly until you've been on the medication for a month and it may be your dose then needs to be adjusted.

Some people do find that anti-depressants make it harder for them to feel their emotions, whether happiness or sadness and so you may also find this though if you are thinking about going on them the positives should be weighed against the negatives to see if it worthwhile you going on them or another form of treatment (such as therapy/ counselling; often done anyway in conjuction with medications) should be considered as an alternative.

As you look like you're wanting other people's own personal experience of how they've been with them I am going to move this thread to Mental Health Discussion and Support where I feel it would be better suited. If you want it moving back here or elsewhere you can discuss this with the forum mods and they can sort that out with you.

think animad summed it up very well

I also though just want to say that medications affects people in many different ways... so although it may be helpful knowing how anti depressants effects others... dont think that as it effected them in this way it will effect you in that way also

hope that made some sense

Well the main side effects I have experienced from different ADs is tiredness and dizziness.

For me, the medication doesnt completely eliminate the depression but the episodes are shorter and much much further apart.

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…

From Prozac I had the side effects of tiredness, strange mood changes, and memory loss. Hence I am on a new medication starting today, wish me luck lol. But really, they all affect people differently. You should ask specific questions to your pharmacist, doctor or a nurse.

Strangley, I've only been on mine a week and I've wanted to kill myself a lot in that week - but apparently that is a common side effect.

"John, being brave is going where no man has gone before and with Lizzy Stark, that is NOT what you'll be doing!" - Aunt Polly.

“I told him I was going to betray you, and betray Lyra, and he believed me because I was corrupt and full of wickedness; he looked so deep I felt sure he'd see the truth. But I lied too well. I was lying with every nerve and fiber and everything I'd ever done...I wanted him to find no good in me, and he didn't. There is none.”

It really depends which anti depressant it is. Anti depressants won't make you any less happy or hyper, they don't calm you down and may even make you more hyper depending on your underlying condition. The medications that 'even you out' are called mood stabilisers while anti psychotics are the ones which are solely for calming things such as hyperness (strictly mania which is a little more severe than just being hyper) down.
Tiredness, mental fogginess, increased appetite and lack of co-ordination are to name a few of the side effects I've personally had with anti depressants but it really varies from person to person.

I've heard that it can increase appetite and that worries me a little. I know it sounds stupid but I really hate my weight already ><
The dizziness also worried me because I have low blood pressure so I'm prone to dizzy spells and fainting
I guess I'll just have to discuss it with my doctor if I decide to go.
Thanks for replying everyone.

I was on Citalopram for a day. Came off it the next. No way could I tolerate any of the side effects.

But I'm poorly (not just mentally) and I've been recently(though I was on this for that day at the beginning of this year - but I was poorly then too) told that I'm too weak for medication(amongst other things), so yeah.

Different for everyone =)
Goodluck.

They tend to cause appetite loss for me, as well as mood swings. i'm no longer on them but i've been on a bunch. i can't take any by themselves or i get way too bad of mood swings. but that's cause i'm bipolar.

Thanks. <3

Yeah I'd definitely recommend mentioning your blood pressure problems. I don't think it;s stupid to worry about the possible increased appetite | weight that meds can cause. It can be really distressing, I know I have found it to be. Really doesn't help when an anti depressant designed to help with your mood in turn piles on the pounds and makes you feel like ****!
