I am currently:
DBT ending and question for those on meds

Hi,

I've been in DBT and I'm at the end of the group sessions now. I do find it has helped a lot, especially with self harm and suicidal behaviours. However I'm still as depressed as I was when I started. Its been a lot of work and commitment and I'm disappointed with the results as even though the feelings are easier to deal with, they're still there just as much as ever.

I will be continuing individual sessions but again I don't know if I'm getting the results I want. I find in the depression area it has been pretty useless. I'm diagnosed BPD by the way.

So that brings me to my question:

For those who are on medication, has it helped? Is it worth it to give it a shot? I have never been on medication and will admit I'm a little afraid of giving it a go. I see a psychologist and he obviously can't give medication....if I do want to do this should I still talk to him about it and ask for a referral to a psychiatrist?

What does a psychiatrist do? Like do we just talk and I get a prescription? Or is it more than that?

I'm really just getting to the end of my rope here....I know I have a great therapist and many things in life do seem to be slowly improving....but it just isn't enough. And like I said, I'm still constantly depressed and struggling with every day life.

Any help and input is appreciated.

Definitely talk to him about meds and ask for a referral. You can then discuss it with the psych and weigh out the pros and cons of trying meds.
He may even have another suggestion, perhaps a different 'talk' therapy.
But i think it is definitely worth looking into to. Once you have all the information, from a doc, you can then make a proper decision.

asking for a referral can't do any harm, and i think if the psych you see agrees, meds would be worth a go. if you find the right one, it can work wonders, especially as you're already using the DBT skills you learned.
