Triggering (Abuse) - Melatonin

So i'm on 6mg of melatonin to help with insomnia. I've been taken it for around two months and two weeks ago had the dosage increased because it wasn't making much of a difference... and it still hasn't done much because I still wake up a lot (though this could be because of nightmares), and some nights it doesn't seem to work at all.

I'm just wondering if any of you guys are also taking this and if it works for you?

xx

PS. Sorry if this is on the wrong thread, i wasn't sure where to put it

I take it if I really need it as my mum gets it from the USA over the counter, but I don't really see much of a difference if any... I prefer to take Kalms to help me sleep to be honest. I hope you find something that helps... have you tried the usual sleep hygiene stuff? xx

Yeah, I tried the sleep hygiene things. Never really made much of a difference either! I tried over the counter sleeping meds too but they made me drowsy during the day and so was told to stop. Is Kalms any good? That's one I haven't tried...

xx

I find it's good for sleep and doesn't leave me groggy the next day to be honest. Which is brilliant for me as I'm already on an an antipsychotic as it is... maybe worth a try? I guess what'll work for one person, wont for another... I hope that if you try it that it does work for you and not leave you groggy in the mornings. Lyssie

My 9 year old nephew (adhd, etc) has it and uses 6mg at night and even he can resist it. He is absolutely tiny and weighs around 3 and 1/2 stone. I don't know whether the heavier you are the more you would need but maybe you need it upping?

Thanks MacKitty!

Maybe the melatonin needs to be upped... next appointment with the psych I'll tell him it's still having little to no effect and see what he suggests. Thanks!

I was on melatonin for a while. It isnt a drug to help you sleep, but its the chemicals naturally found in your body, that if you dont have enough of cause insomnia. So melatonin only works if its physical reasons you cant sleep, not psychological ones. Thats why its easy to resist.

hope you find something that helps

How strange; if that's the case I wonder why the psych even bothered to give them to me; after all, he does know that I wake up a lot due to nightmares... I'm taking propranolol as well though; maybe that has something to do with it all? O.o;;

I don't know if the above was aimed at my comment but just to let you know that my nephew does not have psychological reasons for his inability to sleep. It is due to his adhd - has differences in the way his brain works - so the melotonin should work. The problem is, if he doesn't go to bed when he feels sleepy from it he kind of gets past it.

Perhaps you need to learn when it is making you sleepy, if you get what I mean?

Sorry, I was in an incredibly oversensitive mood yesterday and feel a little silly on reading the posts back. I know it wasn't anyone getting at me, just my paranoia

Melatonin is a naturally produced chemical that is associated with sleep, mostly as its production is linked to the zeitgeibers of dimming light. Mostly it will only help if you have a low production of melatonin, ie to regain asleep routine - so for short term useage.

It is not liscensed for use in the UK as there is considered to be a lack of evidence for it actually working. It is considered by the UK prescribers to be a bit too handy-wavy

"It is now available for prescription in the UK. My psych prescribed it to me and I was able to get it from the pharmacist. In the past people had to get it sent from the States."

Oooh, I didn't know that, sorry. I have always been told it was not available for prescription in the UK.

I asked my doctor for it, cause they took away my other sleeping meds.
He said it wouldn't work cause my insomnia isn't caused by a physical problem, its all down to psychological reasons, and melatonin is a hormone.

I've been taking it for a couple of years. I was the complete opposite: my body was able to ignore most of the sleeping medicines that were prescribed (I used to sit awake at night after taking the highest possible doses of Temazepam or Zopiclone... odd). Melatonin didn't work for me at first either. I was about to give up on it, and then was given the advice to take it, and then switch off all the lights.

Since then, whenever I take it, I get as much interrupted sleep as my body needs. It's amazing.

The only time it worked for me was on prescription at 750mg. It did upset my stomach tho, which kind of defeated the purpose.
Talk to him and see if he will increase it, it may work and you have a lot of room left yet.
Odd it's prescription only in UK; here it is in every drugstore and health place.(Only at 3mg/tablet dosage tho)

I live in the UK My psych did say something about us still not being so sure about it though, and how there are experiments being done for up to 12mg (I don't know if this is true but it's what he said!).

Next appointment, will tell him I'm still having problems with sleep... and ask for other ways to help promote it! Thanks everyone

xx
