General Medical Question - Non Urgent - Autism

Can you get autism in your teens.

Recently (well months realy) ive been gradually reading sentences wrong so like it could be "they went out to see who was about" and i will read it "yeh went out to see how about" and i can read this at lest 3 times before i relise what it actually says. ive also been spelling words like "spelling" as "speeling". ive always been rubbish at spelling, and i spell phintically (how it sounds) i also always either add letters or leave out letters.

im always day dreaming and imaginging things.... im 17 in 4/5 weeks :O :( i even like being alone in a wierd way and i always dream up things like new worlds or me being someone else in different ages in different locations and rubbish like that. this isnt rigth for a 16 year old can it?

i like pattens or things to be the same. also appartenly i shout alot like loud talking but im not, to me im only talking that "loud" becasue everything to me seems to be the same level or noice.... i swear im not shouting.

please tell me what you think... thanks

Im going to move yourf thread to the mental health board as it does not require any first aid treatment.
Good luck with finding information.

isnt autism something you are born with and not something that can develop. maybe you should look up google or go ask your doctor.

As said, autism is a disorder you're born with, however, you can still be diagnosed in older years as the symptoms may have been missed.

The spelling thing isn't autism at all, it's probabably a very mild form of dyslxia that no one has bothered to diagnose because it doesn't interfear with anything (or it doesnt seem to by what you said)

you can't devlope autism in your teens, but like pup said it can be just *missed* when your younger, or be excused for.

Some of the 'odd' personality traits -- have you always been like that? Maybe you can ask friends who you've been with for years or your parents. it can't devlopse, but sometimes people don't notice oddities like that until you're 'too old to be behaving like that". I do it too. According to my friends i'm overly-blunt and have absolutly no volume control. *shrug* if you want to see a psych go ahead but if your life (social and otherwhise) isnt effected, i dont see why bother

Autism is a neuro-genetic condition that you're born with. Symptoms initially develop in early years, but could become more pronounced during adolescent years. As it is a spectrum disorder, it varies in severity.

However, sudden loss of ability to spell is not something that occurs in autism. The condition can cause learning difficulties, which would mean delayed speech and language skills, but if you had them to begin with there is no indication whatsoever that you can acquire autism and lose those skills.

This doesn't sound like autism to me at all.

I have Asperger's Syndrome and have researched this topic for years, which is why I felt obliged to comment on it.

Also, this shouldn't be in "Mental Health Discussion" as it's not a mental health condition and should never be lumped in with that.

What you are describing regarding spelling and reading sounds a lot like dyslexia. Have you ever been tested for this?

Actually, a lot of mental health services deal with Autism, as they have many difficulties socially and can be treated through CBT. :)

It's still not a mental illness though, and CBT is pretty poor in treating autism, it might help it, but it's a learning disability, not a mental illness, different cognitive functioning [someone correct me if this is the wrong term, sorry], doubt your run-of-the-mill mind over mood is going to be used for anything other than toilet paper in the face of aspergers or high functioning autistic spectrum at the best, and highly unlikely with severe autism.

I know people with learning disabilities, including who were inpatient for short times in hospital, and generally I think they found it even harder to cope there, and generally yeah, mental health services may deal with autism, doesn't mean autism is now a mental illness. Just like people with epilepsy may have therapy to cope with the neuropsychiatric side of it, doesn't mean to say you'd put a post on epilepsy in this forum.

You might, since it's just mental health discussion, and I guess since autism spectrum diagnoses are associated with cognitive functioning, it's fair that it might be found here. You may think there is a more appropriate area of the site, though?

A lot of issues that are discussed in MHD are not mental illnesses.

Autism can be treated through mental health professionals, it has A LOT of aspects to it, and some of those aspects can be treated through the therapies used in mental health care.
But no one is saying it's suddenly a mental health illness/disorder, just that it has some aspects to it which can be treated through that sort of care.

phoenetic spelling isn't a symptom of autism or asbergers syndrome though. It is the main symptom of dyslexia, but if you're not struggling to read a simple sentence it's probably not worth worrying about.

Being a bit of a dreamer, and even a loner isn't nessarly bad. If you're unable to talk to people there might be problems, but not always autism.
