I wouldn't call it a 'very mild form' of bipolar, it is still a disorder in itself, it is considered on the bipolar spectrum but there are so many levels and severities of any illness, let alone bipolar which has so many levels and subtypes, I think cyclothymia like any disorder is hell to live with, at any level. I think one of the best descriptions I've found researching in it just now describes it as "a form of chronic bipolar disorder" rather than a mild form.
It is a mood disorder, not a personality disorder, although rapid mood swings are a symptom of some personality disorders such as borderline pd (also known as emotionally unstable personality disorder).

Your gp will probably refer you to a psychiatrist to confirm the condition, but iether way you've taken the right step in the direction for help, and I really hope things get better soon.
