Horehound - Dead Weather [album review]

Horehound 2009
Dead Weather
Third Man Records

Ever wondered what would happen if you mixed The Raconteurs, The White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age and The Kills together? If that answer is a yes, you would get the Dead Weather. Horehound is their first released studio album with singles like Treat Me Like Your Mother and Hang You From The Heavens. Jack White, Jack Lawrence, Dean Fertita and Alison Mosshart come together under Jack White's record label, Third Man Records to produce Horehound.

Now from the first encounter Mr White's new band with Hang You From The Heavens I knew I was in for an interesting album. In all honesty, it is an interesting album and an interesting take on the term, supergroup. The last supergroup that I was into that wasn't Jack White related was Keenan's A Perfect Circle. Jack White, known for his interesting guitar riffs and solos for his original group The White Stripes, has somewhat proven that he is a better drummer than his fellow drummer, Meg White, in the Dead Weather and that he shouldn't be constricted to just singing and guitar playing.

I Cut Like A Buffalo is another track worth mentioning but is yet to be released. If you like heavy bass lines and echoed electrics, this album is the one for you for this year. I suspect strongly that Jack White has gone back to his original self and went back to concentrating on covering Bob Dylan's songs like he did in The White Stripes, because I swear New Pony and Rocking Horse are Dylan's works.

Alison Mosshart's scrappy appearance makes up for her voice as the lead singer in this, with Jack White not only drumming, but singing as well. This album is nothing like what Dean is used to playing but it's interesting to see him take on such a role as lead guitarist. But somehow, it doesn't surprise me that Jack Lawrence took on the bass in this band.

Overall, how would I rate it? I would rate it a good 10/10. It's got a little bit of everything really. Rock heavy songs, where you just want to head bang (such as Treat Me Like Your Mother) and songs that could just send you to sleep (such as Will There Be Enough Water?). I also have to ask myself one thing, why wasn't their cover of Are Friends Electric? on it?
