I can't go to the doctor's

I'm obviously some sort of crazie, considering everything. I really think that now I need some kind of medical thing that might help me. It's been offered millions of times before but I wasn't in a place where I could accept it then.

To where can I go if I can't go to the doctor's? Which I can't. I'm not in an emergency so I'm not going to turn up at A&E. I just saw that episode of Desperate Housewives where Bree checks herself into the psychiatric hospital; I wish we had institutions like that here.

I walked past the Samaritans' place yesterday (just casually, yanno) and now I don't want to go there because it's small and that made me realise somehow that being Warrington, it's probably old people who run it. And I love old people in general but I don't want to tell them things and make them sad. I also realised that I might know the people who work there, in which case I would tell them nothing at all, and wish I'd never gone in.

xx

Why do you think you are "some sort of crazie"? and why can't you go to the doctors?

We can't diagnose things here, unfortunately, so the only way you will know if you have a mental illness or not is if you see somebody professional. We can give emotional support and advice but we're not qualified to do much more.

Yea, we don't. Your going to have to go the doctors. Its such a shame, why don't you like going to the docs?

I've been cutting and feeling depressed for ages and have disordered eating. I've sort of been diagnosed with things before but only by people like a school nurse and school counsellor so I don't think any of it is on my medical records, although the records do have a lot of talk about it.

I hate the doctor's. I hate the place and I've had a panic attack at least the last two times I was there, and when I was there it was very reluctantly. Bad things have happened to do with doctors. I don't like it.

I need some kind of professional help though, I think. If the doctor's is the only place I can go to, I just won't get it.

You could talk to your school nurse and counsellor about getting a referral to CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) if they feel you need it because of your self harm, low mood and eating.

Have they mentioned it before?

I mean, you could ring counselling services, like CAHMS ( like euphoria said ) and EIT (Early Intervention Team)

I've left school now though! And I definitely can't trust anyone connected with that place. I was referred to CAMHS twice but I just refused to go... now I would like to do that but it's too late for me. I've had plenty of these people give me phone numbers to call, but I've always ripped them up and thrown them away straight away because I couldn't accept at the time. I still have one but it's on my old phone, which isn't working. I don't know who to contact. =\

Edit: oh thanks Rebeccastar! I didn't think of that! Yeah I could ring CAMHS. Thanks for your help! They probably have massive waiting lists and I'm moving away, but I guess it's well worth a try. :) xxx

How old are you?

You may be referred to a psych or local CMHT if you are at the "leaving age" for CAMHS but that will be through a doctor.

I know it's scary, but it sounds like you could really use the help and the first time always feels worse. It gets easier :)

As for the checking yourself into a psych hospital - on TV they condense the process and change the experience to appear how they want it to appear on a show. And even in a psych hospital, you would encounter doctors.

Really the best way to get help is to go to a doctor of some sort. What is it you're afraid of? You say if that's the only way, then you just won't get help, but I don't think it will do any good to let things get worse.

Your local Samaritains unit might suprise you... I work in one (as a Samaritain) and I'm 22, and there are quite a few other young, trained people. Most of the guys are around 35-45. Try it :)

I really don't like them....
If I do have to go to the doctor's I just won't go :\ but I'll try ringing a few numbers I've found on the Internet first. I think maybe CAMHS might take me if you need a referral, because I've already had two but just ignored them? Maybe if I try to persuade them.
If it gets really desperate I guess I can ask my friends for the counsellor's number and maybe get a referral off her. I'm not looking forward to it though. Thanks guys! xx

how about changing your doctors if you've had bad experiences? I know some are incredibly unhelpful, but your local MIND might be able to suggest ones that are sympathetic and knowledgeable about mental health. otherwsie, as others have said, you might be able to contact your local mental health team direct, or give samaritans a go and see what they're really like. Or phone them first, and build up slowly...

Can you maybe just phone your doc instead of going to see them? I've sometimes done that and it's amazing how much they can sort out over the phone. Then at least you've had a doctor "rubber-stamp" things so to speak.

Or also CAMHS, MIND, and possibly even beat are other places I can think of.

Huggles :)
