bully at work led to resignation

hellovets!

i was employed & am employed up until the 11th of july (the date of my resignation) at a pub.

the manager has been bullying me since day one, two of my colleagues have picked up on it, as have customers (including me being asked why i was being used as a verbal punch bag by him).
it got so bad i had to resign, i physically couldn't cope with it anymore, i was crying myself to sleep every night because of it.

it got to the point where he started to criticize me on my private life & relationship with my boyfriend (of which he knows nothing).

as it is my manager who bullied me, many have said it was constructive discharge & i will be speaking to c.a.b tomorrow.

i have to say, when i gave him my resignation letter he seemed to smile in an almost 'i've won' way & then went on to ask if i had another job lined up, to which i said no.

i do have vague records of what he has said to me, & i was wondering if anyone had any advice.

that's awful!

I am 99% sure that you do have some sort of case here, I hope that CAB helps. I'm not sure it's constructive discharge though, as that usually requires that your employer must have recently changed something significant that led to your resignation... the theory being that if the situration has been like that throughout then they'd have expected you to leave straight away... I know it's sounds stupid, apparently the law doesn't understand the idea of things being cumulative... but I am sure that the CAB should still be able to help as what he was doing was plainly wrong (also I am not a lawyer so could have my definition and understanding of constructive discharge incorrect)

You can only get constructive discharge if you were full time as well.

I'm really sorry to hear about the bullying you experienced at work. I think it is getting more common because of the recession-my work place has suddenly changed from a nice friendly place to one rife with bullying-last week a new person (who had only been there 2 weeks) resigned because she was getting bullied by the supervisors on one of her shifts and when she told the manager he said she signed up for it so she could either deal with it or go. I think management are less concerned with keeping happy workers at the moment because there are so many people looking for work that it is easy to replace someone.

what did CAB say?

I thought part-time full-time workers had the same rights these days?

take care - you're better out of there by the sound of it...
