To all York Uni Students

Hiiii =)
Im looking to apply to York next year as my first choice, buuut, I havent been to the open day yet, and dont want to just read the people who talk about York in the prospectus, as theyre obviously only going to say smiley happy things ,

So Im asking for an honest opinion lol, what do you think of the place and the accomodation, and the social life and and and. . . . things?

well I don't go to York but I've looked around.....
It's quite nice!!! but then they didn't do the course I wanted to do so I didn't apply...
but yeah, well respected, and a nice campus... but for student life I guess you'll need a first hand account!

As a little kid you believed in fairytales,
that fantasy of what your life would be: white dress; prince charming who would carry you away to a castle on a hill.
You closed your eyes and had complete and utter faith.
Eventually you grow up. One day you open your eyes and the fairy tale disappears.
But the thing is, it's hard to let go of that fairytale entirely because almost everyone has that smallest bit of hope, of faith,
that one day they will open their eyes and it will come true.

I go! IgoIgoIgo!

As a university, it isn't bad. The nightlife isn't brilliant, mainly because of the lack of a real SU bar (they've built one recently, but because of the competition rules, they've got to advertise drinks at a similar rate to the other bars on campus), and the lack of decent nightclubs. There are three in the city (and to be fair, one of them is more like a giant house party than a club anyway).

But, there are an awful lot of socs, most of which organise socials of various sorts on a farily regular basis. There's the radio and the tv channel, as well as most sports clubs you could think of.

They're doing a mega-mega extension, which looks amazing, due to be open for 2010 - so that'd be awesome for most students starting then.

It's dropped out of the top ten this year; I think it's now 11, but I think it's still in the worldwide top 100, so yeh, it is really quite well-respected - although I seem to remember the graduate career rating being actually really quite low.

The accomodation - well, it completely depends on where you are. We had a house between ten of us, which was absolutely fine - two toilets, two bathrooms, and a nice sized kitchen/diner - but then there are a few colleges in which you've one proper oven between twenty of you, and microwaves only on each floor. It's just a case of priorities, and where you'd like to be.

The colligiate system means that there's quite a division between accom. locations, but it does mean there's a sense of college pride, which brings individuals together, which is cool.

As with any uni, it does have it's drawbacks - but I'm certainly enjoying my two years here :)

whey i start in 2010!! So hopefully it'll be open by the time I get there lol , and cool, do you reckon theres always stuff to do, I do like my nightlife though lol, do lots of people get just as trashed in the bars as they would at a club though? :P I should be asking about education, but this is more necessary =D

People enjoy the clubs that are there, and people most definitely enjoy get very, very drunk (the rugby team is notorious on a Wednesday night), and there is also a fair bit of bar-drunkenness. However, it's nowhere near the same sort of nightlife as if you went to somewhere like Manchester or Leeds, it's obviously a lot, lot quieter. But yeh, no, it's still a good night out!

And it's fine, nightlife/social life is important, and there is only so much you can ask re: education, anyway, as it depends on the dept. :)
