So, when you've cut too deep for the first time and you're so scared you don't know what to do, you now have to trawl through a guide with no human emotion?
...You make it sound like it's a horrible thing to use your resources...resources are good - as in yay, happy things! It's not only easier for anyone trying to reply to pointless threads, it's more convenient to the original poster.
People have worked on this site to provide good, quick, easy to access answers - I don't think it's too much to expect to ask people to actually use it.
But this is my POINT. This was brought up MONTHS ago in the F&CQ when Irene (Morrigan) started a thread asking exactly what the point of the First Aid board was - because the articles clearly state how to take care of wounds, and yes, sometimes (especially for the first time if you cut deeply) you are going to freak out, but from experience after 5-10 minutes you more than likely come to your senses and so are able to look up the guide to know how to treat the wound.
People are asking more and more complex advice on the FA board that the FAA's aren't able to answer because they don't actually have the OP's medical records at hand.
You're telling others to help themselves, but you're also giving these people the option to flood boards like the First Aid Forum because no rules/regulations are put into place about anything - so you can't moan about something you aren't going to do anything about.
And i think whoever said this isn't about the FA board, well, that's a load of tosh because quite frankly it's one of the only boards someone actually asks straight out for advice.
tuesday - posts made seeking support are not pointless, and i think that if you think that something is very..
an article can't change your life. think about how your life changed. was it from an article? i'll bet my bottom dollar it wasn't. real change happens when real people with real problems are reached and supported by other real people who offer real advice.
i think it's a shame that this post makes it seem like RYL's biggest secret is that asking for support is pointless, because that really ain't so.
Right, I spent about 15 minutes reading this thread and tbh, It's just going round in circles. Yeahh maybe i don't understand the actual reason for this thread, but from what i think i understand i don't agree with it.
We get told to go read the stickies and info if we want 'Help' on something, Maybe some people do this and maybe some don't but so what if people don't? They can ask for help if they want? That's what makes RYL actually RYL right? It's a site to help people, People ask questions because they need answers and yet sending them to Google, May just give them the impression that they are not wanted or something on this site? People may feel scared to post something if all they get back is 'Look in the articles instead of wasting our time' I certainly would be scared to do so and that is what puts me off posting. Yehh i know the FA board has alot of repetative posts but thats your job right? To actually help the people on the board when they have a question? Ryl is Ryl and all this is causing is an argument between memebers and it's only going to make people feel bad and things. Why bother in the first place? Meh i know i have proberly got the wrong end of the stick and that i will only get **** thrown back at me like others have done. If you didn't want an argument or people turning nasty you shouldn't have posted it in the first place. Yeah repative posts can be annoying but if they were stopped or something ... Then how would RYL still be RYL?
The idea is to post your questions and ask for support yesh? At the end of the day, its your opinon and ours. Don't like it, then ignore it right?
Articles and stickies are good but people just may want a humen answer given to them? People may be shocked or too upset to go read something and by writting in the forums may actually help them? Everyone is different and seeks out in different ways. That's something thats got to be understand. If people want to post repative posts ... let them be.
RYL is there to help i thought?
I've bet i got the wrong end of the stick here but that is my opinon and if im wrong ... Go ahead and shoot me for it yeh?
Can't be bothered with reading all these pages soooo, no apologies if this has been repeated!
I think there's a difference between like, posting a thread asking if you've got an eating disorder/mental illness/etc. and posting because you need someone to listen or need emotional support. The former does not belong on RYL because we're not doctors, and that is where Aidey's post is very suited, that is when you would reach out for offline help if possible.
The latter is perfectly suited to RYL. Our "mission statement" is "You're not alone anymore" and I feel threads that the OP made because they needed to talk some stuff out, be listened to, get some advice that isn't asking for a diagnosis, etc. is appropiate for the site.
And yeah, I'm a *staff member* of sorts on the CT, I've helped along with others to provide information and advice on RYL. But at the end of the day - what use is a Main Site article when people need understanding, empathy, a listening ear, etc.?
Also - if people are being sent to search engines for answers or support it's very likely they will come across pro sites - which will send members backwards rather than forwards.
I truely hope that no one reads this and stops posting for support :/
Before I reply to the 2 pages that popped up while I was asleep, I want to input a bit about search engines. You know what I've found using search engines? Where the local planned parenthood branches are, where the public clinics are, addresses of urgent care centers and hospitals. THIS is the type of information I'm talking about people finding via a search engine. People can find out what hours their doctors office is open, the names of psychs and counselors etc. I'm not talking about finding support on google, which many people seem to think I meant.
Well it breaks my heart to see you this way,
The beauty in life, where's it gone?
And somebody told me you were doing okay,
Somehow I guess they were wrong.
Right, this has been something in my mind for a long time and I ended up making a (or now several as they have been put up) FAQs basically to stop people asking the same question. That is just regarding First Aid, so I'm not talking about other things at THIS part of my post but when people say "I haven't cut yet but if I do, how do I know if I need stitches" Look down the first page of replies and you'll get your answer/ a link to the Wound Care Guide/ the Cuts FAQ.
I've worked much harder than most to get to where I have in my life. I've been EXTREMELY depressed and very scared at times. But I've got through and I've suceeded greater than most people; actually more than just about anyone in my own personal situation. And how have I managed that, through looking up info. Through taking a bit of time to find what I need. Life outside of RYL involves research so why should inside RYL be different. The whole point of a lot of the articles on the mainsite is to stop people feeling alone as well as educating people and this is the main part. Now I'm not saying that people shouldn't ask any questions about any thing but the quickest thing to do for something OTHER THAN wanting support is to search for articles/ forums for an appropriate topic and then if you can't find one then ask.
I spend quite some time on the FAF and some of the stuff I type needs to be researched. I have also spent hours writing articles, again taken from my own personal research or knowledge that I have not been spoon-fed. The same is true of any article on here and why should people spend hours posting for then to just have the same question come up again and again. And looking in articles for anything usually means you get more info than if you posted and a much quicker, reliable response; then if you're not sure (and again, I am talking widely here, it was only the first paragraph where I was referring to the FAF) then post the question. That's what life's about, pointing people in the right direction. If you just get spoon-fed info you don't learn anything.
And by the way, though me and aidey posted at almost the same time then we have not discussed this together and neither did I know she was online; this is totally separate from the FAF

Nowhere have I, or anyone else, said that support threads were pointless - we have made the point over and over again that these are two separate, distict issues.
an article can't change your life. think about how your life changed. was it from an article? i'll bet my bottom dollar it wasn't. real change happens when real people with real problems are reached and supported by other real people who offer real advice.
All I want to say about that is - I'm pretty damn glad that I haven't relied on other people to change my life - that's something one does for his/herself.
Support is vital. So is making it on your own, and doing something for yourself. It's called a search engine, and I use it.
I ask for support when I need it; I look for the answers I need when I need them. I don't expect people to do everything for me. I have nothing more to say.
Well done for using a search engine.
Patronising much?
Think we're all capable of using search engines - the difference is that if it's all on one website, what's the point??
Many people need support to get to the point of helping themselves, which is where RYL comes in.

The difference in what? You can search on a search engine, you can search RYL. You can read articles on RYL.
Support? For the umpteenth time, support is a separate issue.
This whole thing boils down to effort, and how much effort (work) people are willing to put into finding the information they need. This thread was born out of the frustration of not seeing people put forth any effort, and the concern that if people are always given the information they need they will never learn how to be able to find it themselves. Some people have suggested that this thread isn’t needed and if I feel that way I should say it in the thread. This thread, as it is, is not targeting any specific person. To post what I’ve said in someone’s thread would come off as targeting them in my mind, rather than letting what I feel stand alone in its own thread for all to read. This isn’t about any specific forum either. We will never be able to provide articles for every single situation, and there will always be people who need additional clarification, or have follow up questions, or whose situations don’t fit inside the box. Because of that the forums are still needed. Plus the forums are there for support (in most cases) and getting support is not what I’m talking about here, and I never have been. I understand it can be really hard to put effort into something. Remember, I'm on RYL for the same reasons everyone else is, and I work with sick and mentally ill people nearly every single day at my job. I know how hard it can be, and the only reason I have made it as far as I have is because I learned how to manage for myself. If I had all the information I needed handed to me, I would have never gotten to this point.
Well it breaks my heart to see you this way,
The beauty in life, where's it gone?
And somebody told me you were doing okay,
Somehow I guess they were wrong.
tuesday - no one gets to where they are completely on their own. no person is an island.
what you said there completely contradicts itself;
I'm pretty damn glad that I haven't relied on other people to change my life - that's something one does for his/herself.
Support is vital.
& does google offer support? nah.
i'm pretty glad i have some fantastic people in my life who i can trust & who are remarkable & intelligent, that actually know me, have let me get to know them, who i've laughed with, who i've cried with, who helped me get to where i am, who know me better than i know myself sometimes. rather than a search engine.

Support doesn't change my life! It's important but I change my life, not others. It's the difference in your parents encouraging you to do your best in school, and them doing all your work for you. Separate issues.
Does Google offer support? No, it offers answers and information.
