The film progressed and I turned my attention back to it, experiencing the swoops of excitement in one moment then belly deep laughter the next. Then came a particular scene which in retrospect had a little anticipated irony, but at the time, it brought my good humour crashing down around my ears.
On the hand of the boy on the screen, bloodied scratches were appearing, etching deeper and deeper. I rubbed my arm almost without realising I was doing it, pressing down on old cuts. A woman stood over the boy. “That's right. Because deep down you know that you deserve to be punished.” I fought the urge to bolt. Deserve to be punished, you deserve to be punished…the words echoed in my head, gaining momentum every moment, and the image of the cuts was etched on my eyes.
I heard a small involuntary gasp, turned my head, and saw Cathy in a similar state. I reached for her hand and she latched on, gripping tight, her fragile fingers digging into my palm. She leaned over and asked if I was ok, we had a quick conversation, then settled back into the film, letting the rest of the scenes wash over us in a haze, not quite able to put the phrases and images out of our heads, but learning that we had the power to overrule the thoughts.
