But how on earth can you research it?

Depends on what aspect of it you were researching I suppose.
The project I did was for Sociology and it was gender module - so I was looking for research based on victimisation and statistics (which are REALLY easy to get hold of) and did some research into second wave feminism and the impact of the media and rates of reporting domestic violence.

The essays were for Criminology and I was looking at male violence on women and it was more theoretical so I was looking at strain theory and hegemony and "infamous" cases of violence against women so Jack the Ripper and Fred and Rose West and people like that.

Once you know what you're looking for it's easier.

I was thinking about researching awareness and policy but i've no idea if it's even relevant to sociology. -_-

Yeah,it totally is.
You can look at like, feminist arguments about lack of government funding and reasons behind it. Construction of females as victims as a stereotype and whatnot.
